Message: Turning 50 has sparked some memorable events at Hawthorne. Anyone who was anyone in 1969 remembers the night before our senior year. There was about a 100 people there that night. There must have been 1000 rolls of toilet paper. We went down the halls, through senior square, through all the trees and left a mess unequal to any ever seen at Hawthorne High before. There were cheerleaders, football and basketball players, wrestlers, and just average students. The next day most all of the toilet paper was still hanging from the trees and we all knew that 1969 was going to be a great year. Now that most of you 69ers have turn 50. I hope those who were there can also remember stories like this one. Lets start typing them into feedback. Bring back those old memories and share them with everyone.
Just jocks, cheerleaders, and average students huh. Didn't sound like there were any ABOVE AVERAGE students there. OK, anyone else have an HHS vandalism story they want to cop to?

Message: Hi everyone! I recently visited my daughter, Cristy, in New Hampshire as the leaves were turning. What a sight! She'll be living there for a couple of years while her husband gets his MBA at Dartmouth College. This picture was taken at Billings Farm where the farmers showed us how cows are milked these days. You wouldn't believe it!
I remember when I used to have dark hair too!
Linda
It looks like the old Billings place is on fire.

Dotty, if you think 60's Hawthorne was happiness, you should have been there in the 40's and 50's! IT WAS BEEEOOOTEEEFUL! And such a small-town atmosphere ... it was grand.
Now THAT was funny, JB2! "Twiggy in a wetsuit" ... I'm still laughing.
And to you Mr. Jensen! Shame on you! That was really a great and funny story. In the 40's and 50's I remember not ONE such topless bar.
AND WHERE IS THAT SLOE ONE! And the Hood guys. And our writer or writers, Jim Backus!!!??? Oh, excuse me ... Mike Backus. :-)
Yeah, where are you guys? Are you mad or sumpthin'??

Message: Hey Rick Trullinger: Where did you get that map of my old Herald Examiner paper route? I got that paper route from Billy (Beezer) Baird who trained me how to fold papers into quarters, thirds and halves and get up to 100 papers at a time on my bike. Used to ride cross Hawthorne every Sunday at 4AM to eat early Sunday breakfast at some dinner on H Blvd and pick up papers at warehouse on East side of town. Nowdays, I can't get my son out of bed to sweep a driveway! Times have changed.
Other map memory- your map contains the core of Holly Glen which produced such Hall of Famers as the Bryan Family, Nielsen Brothers, Bob and Dave Sayad, Fred and Jimbo Richards, Mike Scott, John Fowler, Bill and Steve Tamburrino, Don Pike, Bob Gunnin, Bob and Dick Toth, Bill Cox, and the Morris Brothers. We had some great baseball games at Cabrillo school that started at 9AM and past dark when an outfielder got hit in the head with a fly ball. Home run derby over the brown monster fence (12 foot high handball court at 300ft) was the best. Nice memories.....now, I have to go home and pay the mortgage! I'd rather be a kid again in Holly Glen- Go Wiseburn, Beat Hawthorne American!

Message: Reading Wayne?s story about Hollys reminded me of ?My most memorable Holly?s story?. My father owned a business that was located next to the Bucket (a topless bar in Lennox). In the mid sixties the Bucket had a little lunch window and some seats so you could order a burger and sit outside to eat. This of course was Pre Topless. I use to go there on Saturdays and get lunch. One day they started to remodel (topless) the front of the Bar and took away the little window. I asked how was I to still get my lunch. The owner said that I could come back into the kitchen whenever I wanted. So one day I was standing in the kitchen waiting for my order when this scantily clad young woman came up behind me and yelled ?Bobby?. Well I turned around and saw that it as an old friend of Brother Bills who he had gone to school with. (I can?t tell you her name as she now has grandchildren) I would see all of her each and every time I went in for food. I was about 15 at the time. Well several weeks later I meet some buddies at Hollys. As I was leaving this girl with her mother yelled ?Bobby?. I turned around and looked at her curiously. Then I said, ?I didn?t recognize you with your clothes on?. Her mother gave me daggers and I quickly left. If that young grandmother is viewing this please send me your email address.
So it was someone in the class of 63, 61, or 60 because no one in my class would do that.
I think Paco probably knows her.

Message: A tremendously entertaining "indie" documentary film on tribute bands has just been released (Tribute The Movie www.tributethemovie.com). Although the subject of the film is tribute bands, its really a story of hopes and dreams and of never letting go of the music that inspired you. Five tribute bands are featured (tributes to Queen, Journey, Kiss, The Monkees and Judas Priest) and the back stories are poignant, funny and sad. The film is showing as part of the AFI festival at the Hollywood Vogue theater @ 4:30 p.m. Friday 11/9/01. If you are a music lover who will always love the music you grew up with, this film will appeal to you. (PS, I am not in the film and neither is Which One's Pink?)

Message: Debbie, Yes I do remember you. That was Winchell Donuts across from the pool hall (Ivan's). I really lived for cruising the Blvd. This week end I remembered another story from the Blvd. As everyong knows, no night of cruising would be complete without a stop at Holly's before heading home. Well one night I was cruising in my 56 Chevy, which only had a low gear, so slow cruising was how it rolled. My friend Brent Shannon and I went to Holly's for a cup of coffee. As we sat at the counter Brent said to me, "Wayne isn't that your car?". On Hawthorne Blvd, waiting for the light to change was someone stealing my 56 Chevy. Brent and I knew he would not be going too fast, so we got into Brent's 67 Chevy and chased him down. In an alley he left the car and started running. we let him go and returned to Holly's to finish our cup of coffee. We talked and laugh about the poor theft and how funny it must have been, when he found out the car only had a low gear.
Maybe he was starting a junk yard.

Message: Got a funny "Hawthorne Story". We, my buddy and I, got really bored one day with nothing to do we decided to use the phone (We were 13 yrs old). We would get out the ol' phonebook and call certain people and joke around with them. This one lady we called "Grandma" and at first she thought we were her grandkids. But she caught on to the game really fast and the phone converstation ended really funny her saying come on over and get your cookies or something like that. Then I found this girl "Rachael" number listed who I was shocking in love with. It so happened that when I called her I had tape recorded our converstation (found a gadget I thought I was one of those characters from "Mission Impossible"). Well, being shy and not much to say we only talked for like 10 minutes. As I got older phone calls where getting more longer where I was forced to get my own phone at an age of 15. The longest phone converstation was to a girl who went to Leuzinger which was 4 1/2 hours (we both actually watched the sunrise) but that record was broken by another girl of 6 hours. I'm still curious as to whom those girls (or girl) where that called me who they claim to say they got it on the back of the girl's bathroom wall at I believe Hollyglen park (what an honor...I can see it now, "For a good time call Ray). Those girls are still a mystery.
I had a girl call me once and ask if Robert was there. I said yes, but he's painting my sister's toenails right now.........she hung up.

Message: Yes, I will turn 50 tomorrow, but my mind is still in good working order. I remember a hot summer day in 1969. The waves at 26th street were not breaking so 12 friends got together to have some non-beach fun. Bebop Hegg had a 1954 Ford station wagon, which he aquired for some $35.00. It could hold the surf boards and a lot of people. Well on this summer day Bebop, Tony Jaqua, Scott (Mini) Davison, Carl Hegg, myself and 8 others piled into the Ford wagon for a little fun. Hokey ponokey was the destination. Once there, we road the hills of dirt, creating a mountian of dust. Bouncing from side to side in the wagon only to come to a stop when a Hawthorne Police officer arrived. He watched as 12 bodies piled out of Bebop's wagon. Shaking his head, he looked at the gas cap (an old rag), and said to Bebop, "I want this piece of junk in the junk yard today". So that day I followed Bebop to Gardena and they gave us $25.00 for that 1954 wagon. Not to bad for a lot of good times and it only cost him $10.00. Be a Coug!
FINALLY!! A Hawthorne Story. Have a great day, Wayne....
