I agree, we need more input from the 50's and early 60's Cougs. Where are you people??

Message: Hi John and Cougs
It has been awhile since I have added something to the feedback page. I just had major surgery and I am home recuperating. I was so upset that I would be home for such a long time away from my computer and I wouldn't be able to check in with all my friends at Ctown, so my husband surprised me when I come home from the hospital with a new computer for home. I added my new Email address to Ctown this morning, also sent in my dues, you should have it by now. You know I live up here in the wine country, so maybe I can catch up with you when you come up here. I know so many of the people that write in feedback, but don't know if any of you remember me. Well take care Cougs and John, my cars sure look good on Car Talk, thanks.

Yes, we finally have a new Car Talk page. All you car people please take a look at Pat's contribution. Thanks Pat, and no hot rodding until you get well.

Message: For Cheryl: Dallas, OR is 13 miles west of Salem, OR on HWY 22 enroute to the coast. Lived here from 80-90 then spent 10 years in Alabama and Virginia, came back here when my father passed away to take care of my mother. Growing up isn't all roses.
For Dan: Aren't you retired yet? Cops can only last so long. Just drove 400 miles round trip to watch my grandson play JV football for North Valley High School in Grants Pass, thank goodness he passed on the trainer route. Definitely ready for a 40 year reunion. That picture doesn't do me a present day justice.

Hey Neil, most of the pictures don't....Dans does.

Maybe he only attended a couple years and didn't actually graduate from HHS? And thanks again to Petey, who actually had a photo of Ron and e-mailed it to me! Thanks to everyone who's been trying to help me solve this mystery!!
Tara, If Ron's been found then check with Carl Tank who handles all the Class of 1970 reunion people. Carl's email address is Bainestank@aol.com.... again, Good Luck

Message: Sure Bobbie... I grew up on 137th ST between Shoup & Ocean gate. We used to go over to the vacant field where the 405 is and shoot our BB guns, Bow & arrows and ride our bikes pretending they were motorcyles in the field. I blew out many a tire in that lot. After they built the 405 We had to go over to the vacant fields the other side Aviaton across from Dana Jr. & the railroad tracks. We still had a lot of fun playing in the dirt they were piling up for the freeway and riding our bikes on the freeway after it was paved before they opened it. It was great you could ride your bikes on that freeway for miles. That was our main way to ride to Lawndale. Then they opened the freeway and ruined our fun.

Message: Cheryl, I will try to find you a banana seat. Jim, John, can you see the faces on the worm riders when they see Cheryl on my handlebars going back to the pier? John, JB2 said Saturday is the big day when you get your new bikes. Jim we better have a rope Monday to tie to John's bike so we can keep up. He won't want to stop at Imperial Hwy. He will be going to Santa Monica Beach. Jim, will you still ride with me after John joins the worm? See you guys at 0 dark hundred.
OK, for all your information, "The Worm" is what we call this column of 30 to 50 "Tour de France" type bike riders. They're bunched up and drafting like Nascar Winston Cuppers on a Sunday afternoon at Talladega and moving just about the same speed, only they're silent. God help the person that gets in their way as we almost did one morning. Dan, that bike helmet will not save you when it happens.

I was just reminiscing and want to thank you JB for this web page that allows us look back in time. GO COUGS!!!

Well thanks for that Max. It's you all however, that supply most of the memories. I just tack this stuff on the wall for all to see.

Message: I too remember the construction of the San Diego Freeway. Does anyone still call it the San Diego Freeway? My friend?s father had a contract to pour cement for the State Highway Commission and we use to go up on the Freeway and run our go-carts. I tell everyone that I was one of the first to drive on the 405 at the age of ten. My mother use to ask where I had been and I would say, ?I was playing on the freeway?. After the freeway opened and my mother would get ticked at me she would say ?why don?t you go play on the freeway? and that is how the term got coined in our family.

Message: Hey Bobbie Spencer, we grew up in the same 'hood. When my dad retired from the Navy in '55, we moved to Hawthorne. 458 Glasgow Place, on the corner of 135th St. The houses in the area were just being completed, and none of the new home-owners suspected that 7 years later the 405 freeway would pass through that open field. I remember those early years in Holly Glen as being quiet and peaceful. Later all of the homes on the East side of Glasgow Pl. would be purchased by the State and relocated for the eventual widening of the 405. Progress, huh? BTW, Osborne 5-6680. But it's pointless to call... there's no one there but the memories. Have a great weekend Cougs!

Here's a question for all of you out there in cougartown, how many of you remember when the 405 fwy was not there. I remember my older sisters going and playing on the empty field which is now the 405 fwy. Well that's my trip down memory lane for today. You all have a great week. (what's left of it, anyway).
I remember when it wasn't there. The blue line indicates where the freeway runs today. This map is from a 1958 Thomas Guide.

Message: We just got back from visiting our daughter in North Carolina. They live real close to the mountains and how pretty it was to see it in the Fall. Anyway my first car was a 55 Willys. It was the Greem Bomb. Nothing could hurt that car. It was a tank. But before I owned it, it belonged to my big brother Steve Kristof. He would let me use it but whenever I did I'd get in trouble. One Halloween I and some friends took it out and we got egged real bad. When I got home I didn't wash the eggs off and next morning I got in trouble from him. Another time I skipped my last class and was in the wrong place at the wrong time and this old drunk ran into us. That messed up the front and one headlight just a little. It was very hard explaining why I was where I was at that time. There was another time I was racing with some friends on Rosecrans. My friends got caught and I got away. Boy was I lucky but my friends took the heat. Anyway soon after that Steve got sick of yelling at me so he gave me the darn car and bought himself a newer one. I continued to get in trouble of course. I caused my parents some grief but I have paid for it over twice with my 2 daughters. Thank heavens we all grew out of our wilder days. Now we'll wait and see the grand kids go through it all. Maybe we'll get lucky but I already see it coming with a couple of them. Guess it is just part of growing up. But from what I read on here a lot of our fellow Cougars are still pretty wild and crazy. BTW now I drive a old grandma car, a Buick Century.
Linda how do you mess up a headlight "just a little"?

Guess that's because Fred and I pretty much burned up that phone line many evenings in 61 and 62. We only had one ugly black phone in our house too. My Mom told me if I wanted to talk longer than the allotted time, I'd have to get my own phone. So...working at the Hawthorne Pool, I did...a pink princess style, WOW, was I somethin! Then I realized I had to pay the bill too! However, my 97 year old grandma in Pennsylvania still has a black, rotary dial phone in use today. She doesn't take a shine to this new fangled technology. Makes it interesting when I visit...I have a real excuse for not dialing up my laptop! JB2

It brings back times when I could remeber, see, eat what I want, do what I want to do (oh I still do that), be bad where all I had to worry about was getting a spanking from my dad. Those were the days. Nowadays I have to watch what I eat or it will go down the front of my shirt and when I do something bad it ends up costing me $1000 and wishing I had never met her. But other than that how bad can it be, I live in Hawaii! I figure it's the closet I'll be to Hawthorne considering the first three letters are the same. One day I'll have to come to one of the runs at Pinks or Fosters. I'll have to rent a car but I promise I will rent the most exotic one I can get. I saw some of cars you old timers drive and a normal rent a car just won't cut it. Sorry about the old timers remark. We are only as old as we feel. The HHS baseball team were up against Rolling Hills High for the championship of the El Segundo Tourney in 76 and we did not have a bus to the game. Coach Minami let us drive our own cars to the Rec Park in beautiful downtown El Segundo. HHS won the game and I was feeling rather giddy (read dumb) on the drive back to HHS. In my car was Rick Bainbridge and behind us was Keith Jones and Greg Staffon in Keiths white Barracuda. We pulled up to the stop light at El Segundo & Aviation when I decided to jump out, run back and pound the hood of Keiths car. As I was running toward Keith and Greg I didn't wonder why their eyes grew wide and they were pointing and laughing until I turned to see my car following me and kiss Keiths bumper with my bumper.
