Message: Karen, I'm sure the kiddy land was owned by the Rockwell's beginning in the '40's. I really don't know when they opened it. After 40 years I still dream about it, once in awhile.
My favorite ride to operate was the carousel. It was a genuine antique and had a turn-of-the-century calliope that used paper music rolls, like the early player pianos.
The carousel had a giant electric motor that ran continuously and it was engaged with a clutch that made the carousel turn. Once the carousel was running I would jump on and collect the tickets, ride for awhile then jump off to stop the ride. There was a timer that had a light bulb on top so you could see when it was time to shut the ride down; I used to get so much into riding that I would often forget to look at the light. Many times Mrs. Rockwell would have come out of the back door of her ticket booth and holler for me to shut it down. There was usually a line of kiddies and their parents waiting to ride. Mrs. Rockwell never showed any anger toward me for those long rides. Bob

Message: Thanks for sharing John! You do a good job with low-res photos. We lived about 3 blocks from that amusement park on 116th st. I think that it went up in the early '50's. It was a real treat to go there. I remember Hawthorne Youth Camp well. Some of you baby Cougars probably had me as a counselor. I worked a week there my junior year and another my senior year. In 1966 after I graduated from college, I worked there a whole summer. I thought it was great. I was the arts and crafts specialist. I also was a Parks and Recreation leader at several of the Hawthorne parks for 4 years while I finished college. I bet I kicked many little Cougar butts. I wish I could be with all of you this coming weekend.

Now we all know what a bonafide 1961 Coug looks like, and from where I'm standing it's pretty darned good. We "Vintage Cougars" wear pretty well though. Thanks for sending along the picture of your family. Anyone else want to grace the Cougartown halls with a picture of their family, just send it on over.

Message: Barbara Duran, how the heck are you? You might not remember me, I was the big dumb guy hanging with Steve Gibson, both drooling in the hallway at RH Dana when you or Cindy Kolechi(?) walked by. "BB" had to have meant "bronze and beautiful". Do you ever hear from Debbie or Shirley Cook?
Mr. Plotkin, do you remember it was the c/o 1968 that you wanted to give a math test and if anybody who failed, you wanted to hold back from high school? Thank god they wouldn't let you- I would still be there! However, 31 years of life's experience and 3 sons later, I feel you had a good idea.
My niece and nephews, who also attended RH Dana, told me you were still teaching. Good. Teachers like you are rare and hard to replace.

Message: I remember Hawthorne Youth Camp too. Don Hubbs, Bill Engle and I were worked there for a week in '59. We really had a great time. And I was responsible for trying to keep the boys from raiding the girl's cabins!!! What a job!! It was alot of fun and I wished I could've worked there again. When did the kiddie rides place on 116th and Hawthorne begin? It seems I remember going there when I was a little kid in the late 40's. I don't know if it was the same place or not.

Note: Janice, I remember Hawthorne Youth Camp. What a great week spent in the Summer of 58. Tommy Graves HHS58 and Mike Gillespie HHS58 were camp counselors. We did all the fun stuff you're supposed to at camp. We even raided the girl's cabin. Pretty scary at that time boy.
I think Hawthorne Youth Camp is still there too. That's a great memory....thanks.

It's amazing how this site takes me back to my childhood and York School. I remember going to Joyce Bleeker's (?) house and we walked somewhere in her neighborhood and watched/listened to the Beach Boys practice in the garage .... oh, what we didn't know at that time.
Has anyone kept track of Penny Young? She moved to Thousand Oaks in our Sophmore year. Her Dad had the Texaco station at Prairie and 122nd.
How about Genie Elshire, Kathy Bowker, and Jane Delisle? Remember how sure we were that we would not forget any of our friends or lose track of them?

Message: Jacquie, That amusement park at Hawthorne & 116th was Rockwell Kiddy Land. I worked there on the weekends and during the summer months in about 1958 - '60. The Rockwell's were nice people - they had traveled with carnivals and retired to the kiddy land business. There was a business right next door that rented little teardrop trailers - John B. used to repair the trailers in those days - Small world! Bob
Note: Jacquie, Yes the "Ferris Wheel" was on 116th and Hawthorne. The Boyce Trailer rental was right next door. Thanks for reminding me about packing those lousy wheel bearings Bob. :0)

Message: Reading about Bobby Sherman as host of Shindig: My family and I were in L.A. in 1995 and saw him on one of those morning talk shows...he's an EMT in Los Angeles somewhere...they got him to sing "Julie, Julie, Julie do you love me?" on the show. His voice has aged well.
The Helms Bakery truck came down our street everyday after we were home from school. I'm sure they planned it that way! I remember getting a nickel and buying one of those chocolate covered donuts. It was so neat the way the driver pulled out the drawers and picked them out individually. I always wished I could buy more than one!
Does anyone remember the amusement park at the corner of Hawthorne and 118th? I can remember going there for my 7th birthday with Lynne Brown. It went when they built Clark Drugs.
Does Senior Square still exist exclusively for Seniors? I left HHS after my sophomore year, so never had the opportunity to go inside. I think I got gypped!

Message: Cindy, I spoke at allot of schools around on all the islands. I was involved with No Hope In Dope. Did we come to your school. I remember speaking at some school out on the North Shore. ANd funney you mentioned HVB. My ex (of 4 years) is the director of Membership for the HVB (Gina). YOu are right though, the atmosphere is Hawaii is the best anywhere in the world. I loved just driving around the island with my Jeep and whenever I wanted to pull over and just jump in the water I did. I lived there for almost 10 years and did not get sick one day. I would come back to LA and catch a cold or something. I loved waking up to the clean air and sound of the waves. My favorite town on Oahu is Haleiewa. I love the chicken katsu at Haleiewa Beach Grill. When Gold's Gym opened on Kapiolani I was the Marketing Director for two years. Now its 24 Hour Fitness. I broke my leg when I was a sophmore (or Freshman?) when Marty Wright hit me in his car (going 40mph) and I went through the windshield. I had more than 40 people come visit me at one time in my hospital room. In fact the other guy that was in there asked to be moved. The nurses said they had never seen so many people visit someone like I did. Now that I think about it, I really knew I had friends.

Message: Keith-I must have seen you in those commercials but I just can't picture you in them. My memory of you is that little kid with a broken leg. Sorry. I remember that gym you were building. I worked in Restaurant Row until 1989, I think a short time after that they tore down the old buildings (garment factory or something) and started building something for the longest time. Then all of a sudden Computer City came up. Sorry about what happened. Good luck with your lawsuit. The first 10 years I was here I worked for HMSA then The Queen's Health Care Plan in marketing. In 1990 I went back to school to get my teaching degree and now I'm teaching 4th grade at Waialua Elem. on the North Shore. I've been married for almost 18 years to a guy I met here and we have a beautiful and smart little four year old daughter! Sometimes I get homesick for the mainland but one week's visit there cures me real fast! I enjoy the clean, fresh air and blue skies here. Not to mention the green mountains and sparkling, pristine blue beaches. (OK everyone go make your reservations to come to Hawaii for the summer!) I should be getting paid by the HVB. I actually feel like I have more roots here now than anywhere else, so it really is home for me.

Visiting Cougartown is always so much fun, helps to recall our quaint childhood in Hawthorne. Does anyone else remember the bread van (think it was a Helm's). It would go down each street, blow a whistle and mom's would get their coins and go get bread and donuts! This site continues to reunite old buddies and it is so much fun to visit and have old memories jarred. Like so many others I have moved far from Hawthorne, but I feel like it is a little visit back home just enjoying everyone's memories. Thanks John, this is such a special web site for all of us!

Message:I sure have been enjoying Cougartown, brings back many memories. Some have mentioned the Hawthorne A&W. I worked there for 3 years. From inside it was a great show. Dan Petty was noted as the first male carhop. I remember it well and we had a lot of fun with it. I wonder if anyone knows where he is now? In fact, I have one of the jackets like he wore. The cars that came thru were great. I remember when Wetzler and Nelson would walk thru the lot and check for students who weren't supposed to be off campus during lunch. On Friday and Saturday nights all 75 spaces would fill up and stay that way for hours. Thanks for the fun.

Hey, JB- is Sargent Williams - Don Williams? Must be the same. He was a dear family friend for years and years and in fact was Randy Clendaniels father-in-law. Don passed away back in about 1990 of cancer. His wife Carol lives on the same street as my mom and they are still good friends. Don was a wonderful character. I'm surprised he let you guys go- I don't think he'd have let ME get away with that!

One last thing. The one thing I hated about school was the dress code. Us girls had to wear dresses and skirts. I got sent home a couple times because it was too short or my straps were too thin. When was the dress code changed to pants and shorts???? John Baker, thanks again for making it possible to go back in time. You know alot of us would of never found each other if it wasn't for you. We would of died not knowing where our old friends were.
