UPDATE: Now, I just signed on our PROM NITE photographer..and next I'm off to the video people.. things are starting to take shape, not to mention that Howard "PACO" Duran will be in charge of our "candid shots" and we all know how he always catches us at our very best. Oye Vay.. (sample shown). See what you have to look forward to.. Also, I see an awful lot of 70's people checking into the alumni list.. Are you signed up for PROM NITE??? Now, I'll go back to my easy job of selling ice cream in the rain..
Judy Wudy.. On a quest.

Judy, I've got to say right now that you're doing an outstanding job on our Prom Night. Judy works tirelessly on this project, always staying one step ahead of every problem. There're others who will jump in as time goes on, but up to now it's been virtually ALL JUDY. Thank you for making Prom Night 2001 the best Cougartown event yet. You're the BEST!!!

Remember traversing those wooden planks placed by the wonderful janitorial staff? One of my favorites was doing the ?Slip and Slide? on the lawn in front of the Boy?s Gym during first period P.E. Fun for us, not so for the poor lawn.

Message: To Coach Chauncey; The best high school football coach ever, and had you gone to college coaching, I am sure you would have been the best college coach also. I think you could have motivated one of our GAA teams into going to CIF, I don't mean anything negative about our girls, they were all ladies. Its just that you were blessed with the ability to motivate. And I was blessed with having you as a coach my first two years. I look back on that 1959 CIF team and remember the papers said we were going to lose before every game we played. The only game we lost was to Long Beach Poly in the CIF finals and we only lost by 2 points. Good health Coach and get well soon. Thanks for all the years, and for staying in touch with HHS alumni. He was the best.

Message: To Hal Chauncey,
What a beautiful story about the birth of your daughter. I played ball at GGHS. I think it is so wonderful that you still keep in touch with all of the alumni. Would it be an understatement to consider you a "great man?" Don't be too modest now.
I asked my mom Peggy Peters '61 about that Royal Lord guy and she said he was a real nice guy. You must be proud to have coached so many fine young men over the years.
God bless you Sir. Thanks to John Baker as well, another class act. I mean it. I have nothin' to gain by b-tt kissin'! I'm sure you hear it all the time John. You do have something special going on here. Thanks for considering me on your board message board!
Hawthorne and HHS RULE!

Hi Doug, I can say without hesitation that HHS and Hawthorne was the BEST place to "grow up" in the 50's and 60's. Also, Coach Chauncey along with dozens of other Coach/Teacher/Mentors were responsible for turning out men like Royal Lord, Dan Dye below, and countless others through their tenure at HHS. Today at HHS, I'm sure there are many others that take on that same responsibility, but the early faculty are the ones I remember. I thank my parents and the teachers of HHS and Hawthorne. Without them, we would be nothing.

About Coach Ron Halladay, yes he was strong, he was only about 5'6" but he weighed about 225lbs and all muscle. His forearms were as big as my leg. He was a good man. See you all at Prom Night. Always a Cougar.
Hey Dan, Glad you FINALLY found Ctown again. Dan's yet ANOTHER Cougar from that famous 1959 Championship HHS football team. See you on Prom Night Dan and thanks for checking in. You have to do that every 7 months or so.

Message: Recent events have me thinking about 'Hillbillies' and how that relates to our lives in Hawthorne. During the '80s I heard 'Yuppies' described as "Social lizards who shed their personal histories to move ever upward". The thing that is sad about so many of the people living in 'address' communities is not that a couple of generations back their grandfather was selling apples on a street corner in Brooklyn. What is sad is that they are ashamed of it and pretend it never happened. We Hillbillies, on the other hand, are proud of our heritage, our families, our friends, and our communities. We know who we are and we're comfortable with it. Not everyone will like us. But those who do are ours for life. I'm proud of you Cougs!
My grandfather owned a feed store on Hawthorne Bl. and Maine St. (now 129th) in the 30's and I'm dang proud of it.

Message: I don't know what made me think of it, but if HHS is enclosed with a hurricane fence, how can the coaches make anyone run a "sidewalk" lap anymore? Maybe it was the note from "Ol Coach". I think he was fairly lax with that punishment but I distinctly remember Dallas Yost's voice yelling "Run me another one-Now" at me over and over the first week of school. Did the girls ever get that punishment. For those that don't know (remember) you ran from the back of the boys gym along the fence towards Thriftimart, up the driveway to El Segundo Blvd., along the blvd., up Inglewood Ave., past the pool, and back to the gym. My favorite "punishment" was from an all time favorite teacher, Manny Pizzaro. He would say, "My friend, my attention cannot be divided between you and the rest of the class. Perhaps you would prefer to sit out on the lawn until you can be still?" And then he would never check on me again! I quickly learned to park my car over near the middle of school on Inglewood! Manny was SO COOL! I even saw him at the Alice Cooper- Billion Dollar Babies concert at the Forum. Dudes and Dudettes 70-74 like, rocked at HHS! For music ideas from the 70's don't forget Zeppelin, Frampton, Humble Pie, The Who, Jethro Tull, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jo Jo Gunne, Robin Trower, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Grand Funk, Black Sabbath, Yes and J. Geils. Dr. Demento has several CD's out with great stuff too! I hope everyone has a chance to laugh out loud today. PEACE
Hey Jack, Now there're some great HHS Coach Memories. I can remember Coach Ron Halladay, who in my day was the CEE Football Coach and the Auto Shop teacher. I'd say, "Coach, can I go to Wynns Brothers and get a part for my car?" Coach Halladay would say, "NO..... but you can go to the head if you want to." So I would go to Wynns Brothers, then usually by Frosties, then back to school.
Coach Halladay was a great guy and was one of the strongest teachers on campus. He could take a 16 pound sledge hammer; grab the extreme end of the handle, and raise the thing straight out to his side. I've never seen anyone else do that.

Hopefully,in our school district, this problem has been resolved. I pointed your website out to my daughter's highschool power cheerleading coaches. (Whom are in private industry,) not teachers, and volunteer their time.) Said," when did we lose that". Me thinks somewhere between The Hawthorne Cougars and The White Oaks Wildcats, the spirit got neutered. I am not prepared to give up. They are duly impressed. Fight on. On another note. Regarding to loss of XXXXX XXXXX. What did X. X. stand for anyway? Ah let me think.??? Your memory is the second thing to go! No, let's just kiss him off. Blake

Message: You know who your friends are when you are a Cougar. We are a family bound by our history, our memories and our pride. I LOVE YOU GUYS!!! You are the ones who remember Rosecrans as a two lane road, lined with eucalyptus trees as far as you could see. You are the ones who share the memory of what it was like to ride your bike down that street and not see a car go by for what seemed like hours. You are the ones who felt the soft ocean breeze carry the song of the meadowlark from those empty fields. We remember each others first day of school and first kisses. We played ball with each other when we first learned what it meant to be a team. We are the ones who know what it felt like to walk onto HHS campus for the first time, a freshman, and walk off, a graduate. May the Cougar Spirit be with you, rednecks and all, and remember, as a Cougar, your back is covered. Love, The Goddess
Cougar Pride......that's what it's all about....
