Message: Judy Wudy, one of the secrets of weight loss at our age is...TAKE IT SLOW!!! The skin isn't as elastic as it used to be, and if you lose a bunch of weight very quickly, you'll end up with wrinkles and sags and bags EVERYWHERE! It's taken me 10 months to lose the 50, so I average about 5 lbs. a month...each plateau I hit is viewed not as a setback, but as time for my skin to catch up. My diet is one that is extremely hard to stick to, but of medical necessity for me...I cannot eat wheat in any form. Not only do I have to stay away from the obvious (bread, bagels, pasta, cookies, cakes, sandwiches, etc.), but I have to read the ingredients of literally everything. So I am pretty much relegated to meat/poultry/fish (all unbreaded), fruits and vegetables. Although I do allow myself ice cream now and then. I've also been walking lots more and snacking lots less. So if any of you out there want to try it, more power to you. But like I said, it's very difficult, and I do admit to backsliding now and then, but know I HAVE to get right back with it to cleanse my system...believe me, my body lets me know when I've been bad. Sharon, my prayers are with you today...I'm fairly local to you, so email me if you need anything.
Kinda like the diet the Ding Dong sisters are on. They can eat wheat, but prefer bales of Alfalfa.

I was fortunate enough to have him for Seminar in 1974. I have
to agree with Ricki, of all the many great teachers that I had at HHS, Clayton
Williams and William Goodfellow were standouts. Grateful thanks and prayers
to both of these fine gentlemen.

Message: Some sad news: Bill Goodfellow, English and seminar teacher for many years at Hawthorne is reportedly near death. I guess that he has been struggling with cancer for quite a while. Please keep good thoughts for him and his wife Elizabeth. He is truly a renaissance man! Many of us were very privileged to study under him.
Also, I might add that Clayton Williams had a pretty rough summer. He had, among other things, heart valve replacement. Tough going for a while but I spoke with him tonight and he sounds terrific. Back to his clever little self.
I have to say here that these two men were about the brightest of whom I've had the pleasure to meet. We were very fortunate to have had them both as Cougar teachers.
Sorry about the news, but glad to be in touch again.
Thanks for the update Ricki, and glad to hear from you.

Here you have, ;o)
with an attachment that reads: AnnaKournikova.jpg.vbs.
Do not click on the attachment it is a virus & will infect your computer along with emailing itself to every one in your address book. I would strongly suggest that everyone upgrade your Virus software.
I've gotten it from 2 sources this week too. Go To START|FIND|FILES AND FOLDERS type in AnnaKournikova.jpg.vbs and erase any of these files found.
2. Click on START|RUN and type in regedit. Remove the following registry keys HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\OnTheFly and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\OnTheFly\mailed
that should do it.

Message: Don't try to sell the idea that surf music was invented in the 50's or 60's to any Hawaiian. I'm sure they would argue that when the "Duke" was surfing back in the 20's & 30's the old drums and ghourds were beating away. John, Leuzinger High had the name "Olympians". I heard they were they only school in the country allowed to use that name. In fact they even had to get permission from the IOC which owns the tradename. Am I right for once? It's been a rainy here folks. Luckily it still warm and not freezing. Aloha
Hey Keith, I know the 1932 Olympics were held in Los Angeles; the same year Leuzinger opened its doors. I don't know if they're the ONLY school in the country to have that name, but it's an interesting concept.
I do know that the 1932 Olympics were the 10th Olympiad and that's why 10th St in Los Angeles is called Olympic, but that's another story.....

Message: Good Morning Cougs. I received the following from HHS66 Sharon Leach Moore this morning:
Hello John, I don't know if you are going to be in town before the need is
over, but my husband has just been diagnosed with a large brain tumor, and
needs blood donations. He is in Long Beach Memorial Hospital and is having
brain surgery tomorrow morning, Wednesday, February 14. What we really need
is blood donations of B negative blood. It is a rare type and he will need
at least 6 units. As the tumor is very vascular and the size of a small
grapefruit they expect a lot of bleeding. If anyone wants to donate they can
go to Long Beach Memorial Hospital and give blood for James E. Greene.
Although B negative is preferred, anyone can donate to help replace supply of
blood in his name. We also need everyone's prayers. If you could ask people
on Cougartown for blood donations and prayers, we will be eternally thankful.
If you can help, please give in the name of James E. Greene and I will add James to my prayer list tonight. James and Sharon, we're all with you on this one. I just called the hospital and the hours for giving blood are:
Mon, Tue, and Thurs - 10-11:15am and 1-5:30pm.
Wed and Fri - 8-11:15am and 1 to 3:30pm.
I'm sure you can give blood anytime for James, and not just today or tomorrow.
Park in the parking structure and go across the street to the Rehab lobby. Turn right and it's down the hallway on the right. Please eat before you give blood and they do validate your parking. If you need more info, please call 562-933-0808. Thanks Cougs

Message: Hey Walter! Thanks for understanding that my mis-
representation of the facts is based on my own ignorance
and not any desire to intentionally mislead. In this case
my error was encouraged by Dick Dale himself. The
history section of his website (http://www.dickdale.com/history.html)
reports as follows:
"Dick Dale invented surf music in the 1950's. Not the
'60's as is commonly believed. He was given the title
"King of the Surf Guitar" by his fellow surfers with
whom he surfed with from sun-up to sun-down."
I would LOVE to hear a discussion from our 'grown-up'
Cougs who were there in the day. Did Dick Dale invent
the Surf Sound? Did The Ventures?
Any claims that Dick Dale invented the internet seem to
be unsubstantiated.
I thought Fender Stratocaster invented the Surf Sound.......

Message: Mike Backus... Dick Dale Used to have a club on PCH in Huntington Beach until a few years ago. Also he wasn't the first with the surf sound. That would be The Ventures "Walk Dont Run" Album (1960) included "Wipe Out"(the First Surf Song). Dick Dales 1st album "Surfers Choice" came out in 1961("Miserlou" 1962). The Beach Boys first Album "Surfin Safari" in 1962. All of these were superceded by the great guitarist Duane Eddys "Rebel Rouser" album in 1958. That of course is not taking away by any means the talent of Dick Dale.
