Message: Hey ... John, I think the web site ranks right up there with the Beach Boy's playing at lunch time at good ol' HHS! Had a blast at Cruise Night. It was good to get my old gray hair brother to go. Thanks to the web site he caught up with an old friend (boy the word old is used a lot here) he knew in grade school as well. We all met at Stick n Stein and had a blast and loosened up a bit before we went to cruise! It was fun connecting again with Debi Darling too. The assemblies at HHS - I remember a hypnotist had an assembly there and I remember Karen Webster being hypnotized. A lot of talent assemblies too. The first time I ever ditched school for a short time was during an assembly - and I made it back to class after the assembly let out.
Well Cougs - Have a great weekend.

Thanks Debra, Glad to see you last Saturday night too. These cruise nights just keep getting better and better.

Message: Elizabeth, I can picture the store and it was green, but I can't remember the name. I'd like to say I found that dollar but I was only two. If you dropped it in front of the big white house across the street from that store on Ramona, you didn't have a chance. Remember that place. By the way, my favorite guy on our street was a big guy named Leo that always yelled Buuummm!! out the window of his truck as he drove by me on the street. I always returned the salute. It was an honored tradition that always raised a smile.

1. Who chooses the school colors when a new High School opens?
2. Who chose the Cougar as the Mascot?
3. Have HHS's colors always been Scarlet and Gold and have we always been Cougars?
Thanks for the data.

Yes, we've always been Cougs, and yes, Scarlet and Gold has always been our colors, but I don't have a clue how they were initiated. Anyone??

Message: I had a flash back this morning! The little green store on the corner of 134th Street and Ramona Ave. was my very first "big girl" destination. I was 4 years old when my mother handed me some 'paper money' and told me I could go around the corner (huge adventure!) to buy a loaf of bread. I was so very proud to have been trusted with the family fortune. I skipped down the sidewalk and around the corner to the little market and picked out a loaf of Wonder bread. It was only 15 cents. I took it to the counter and looked for my dollar. It was gone. I was mortified! I looked everywhere. I looked under bushes and cars and on everyone's front lawn. A dollar would have bought the whole family dinner at that time. My mother was so sweet. She didn't yell or anything, but I wasn't given that job for a few more years....What was the name of that store? Does anybody know? DizzyLizzy
Yeah Liz, I used to tell my mom I lost the dollar too.

Message: Hello Cougars; First I would like to say what a great time I had last Saturday night at Fosters. It's always a blast at these things, but at one time last week I was standing there shooting the bull with Jim & Karen Essner, George Miller and his pretty wife, Alan Hauge, Rich Sloan, Richard Hanson, John Baker, Tom Shelley, Tom Burroughs, and lots of other great people that (if not for you J.B. ) would probably only be memories.....Look what you did.....Thanks Man!! I remember the Watts Riot thing very well, what a couple of idiots...didn't a brick go flying by the windshield about the time we decided we should be someplace else??
Love Ya M.S.

Yeah, it was almost like the old days all right. We needed a few others though, like where was Dennis Unfried on Saturday night? I could feel the ghosts of Frosties Past too, like Russ Seyb, Jim Kendall, Charlie Runyan, Ray Seidel, Tom Bell, Ed Lenarth, Bob McClure, Mike Hendricks, Jim Joseph, Vic Jr, Vince Schiavi, Curtis, and a few others. Maybe next time.

Message: Hey Eddie Braun, remember when you, me and John Hastings snuck into the LA County Morgue that one night. The morgue sure is dead after midnight. When we finally got caught we told the guys we were researching for a movie and believed us. One of the guys gave a number to call so we can setup an appointment and get a behind the scenes tour of the morgue. That sure was fun.
Hey that's kinda cool, as we sneaked into the LA Morgue a few times too, but Mike Shay, remember the opening night of the 65 LA Riots. You and me were cruising around in your brand new 64 1/2 Mustang and we were at the Wich Stand and heard the news that some Black dudes were raising hell in Watts. We followed a police car down Central Av. and about 57th St. he hit the parking brake, and before that car stopped he was out and fanning that 45 across a field of "Brothahs". We cut down a crowded side street and I just knew we were a couple of dead "White Boys". That sure was fun!! Wasn't tryin' to upstage you Keith, but that just reminded me of the Watts Riots story.

Message: Hey Dawn, dear God, I hope you didn't look up my senior picture! That thing is heinous! Every copy of it I had, is now in a long ago dumpster, I am not kidding! The photographer made me smile way too big and I look as if I had been snorting laughing gas all day or something! UGH!!!! If you can, look up my jr. year pic, that is what I really used to look like. If John Boy here isn't too busy or can find it, I sent it to him with a lot of other pics so a few other people in here can see what I looked like, too. Seems a lot of people I have been talking to e-mail wise either didn't buy all of their yearbooks or they are lost or something. Makes me not feel so bad now. So, a lot of people aren't quite sure if they knew who I was or not.
As for Mr.Williams art class...I never took art. Just ceramics and crafts. I can draw O.K. but I am a craftsperson at heart, as well as take photos. My boyfriend I mentioned, Rick Ackles, was a star pupil of Mr. Williams and also took fencing from him. In fact, whenever we'd get in an arguement, instead of yelling and such, since he had a foil and saber ( you fencing folks will love this) we'd just have an impromtu fencing match! Hey, worked like a charm! But, since I was always in that bldg. there doing my crafts, I bet ya dollars to donuts we saw each other all the time. That area of HHS was like a second home to me.

Message: I need clear up a few things with regard to the reunion cruise for the class of "75. This cruise was not put on by any of the members of the reunion committee that have put on the 10 and 20 year class reunions. This was put on by the travel agency and cruise line. We were invited like everyone else and didn't feel that the price was reasonable nor was it mentioned on research what actually was going to be done for a reunion. We have put together (as in the past) a reunion which will be on October 7, 2000 in Irvine. Some of the original members and some new committee members are putting this reunion together, and will be looking forward to a good time as at the prior reunions. If some have a problem with the cruise, they need to contact the travel agency or the cruise line. We are looking forward to a good time in October and hope to see as many classmates as possible! Thanks John for letting me clear the air.
Thanks for clearing that up Sheree, and I will place this on the reunions page. Email me and let me know where it will be.

Message: Suzy Jokela Reynolds, I remember you from the time you were about 5 years old. You lived next door to my best friend Patty Mahoney. Her mom was my Girl Scout leader. Actually, I was a sort of friend of your sister Sharon. She was a year younger but she was very involved in Fencing and our art teacher is a good friend of mine. Sharon, Patty and I used to play house together. It seems that you and Natalie Mahoney were friends. You guys were the same age as my little sister Cynthia. I know you went to school together because we all went to Eucalyptus, Hawthorne Intermediate and then HHS. Those were great days and if you're ever in town give me a jingle. What's happening with Sharon? Did you guys ever hear from the Mahoney's again?
To those of you who attended Cruise night. The next one will be a priority. I really couldn't get there and I had been looking forward to it. I'm glad that it was successful. Mom "V" had a great time and I'm grateful that she got there. She's the only family I've seen in 2 years, so John like V6 requested, if you get any pics from my family...I'd like to see them. Hey John, I heard that you got a post from my brother Leo. That's great!

Hey Ricki, I sent Sharon Jokela an email inviting her into Cougartown. We'll see what happens. I hope it all came out fine for you and yes, if I get any pics from your family, I'll pass them on.

Sounds like you live in a fun area! Simi Valley has a little Cultural Arts center and we have some good shows there once in a while. I volunteer there so I get to see them for free. It's nice because I don't feel weird going alone since I am also working. I am really jealous of all those cougars that went to school in the late 60's. How fun to have Peter, Paul and Mary and the Beach Boys play at school! The closest I remember to having a celeb on campus was the year we walked out of third period to support the teachers contract dispute and Fred Anderson from Channel 7 News showed up. Not quite the Beach Boys. So sorry to hear about Christine Granath, I remember her face but she was one class ahead of me.

Does anyone out there remember the fun assemblies at HHS. I remember one time there was a special assembly called, and Peter, Paul and Mary showed up and sang for about an hour. Then Pancho Gonzalez and some other tennis players put on an exhibition at another assembly. I also remember being in the cafeteria and suddenly someone jumped on a table and started playing a guitar, next several others started to sing and play. It was the Beach Boys who decided to play for us at lunch. Talk about a great place to go to school. And again, not enough can be said about JB who put this site together so that we all can recollect these great memories.

Thanks Sharon, but me putting this site together doesn't compare to the Beach Boys showing up and playing for the 5th period lunch group.

Message: Karen (Webster)Kears, you look really familiar. You graduated the same year as my sister, Mary (Aceves), did you know her?
Dawn Moffett, what is so nice about living close to a city the size of Portland is that when you do go and see a good jazz performance here, at a lot of the venues here, you actually get to go up and meet the person! Sometimes even have a drink too. I've met Tom Grant several times, he's a local though, but well known in jazz circles and has about 15 C.D.'s out, and Jeff Kashiwa, ex-sax player for the Rippington's, Dan Siegel who is a native Eugene,OR musician ( hear that Robin). Even the bigger, nicer venues, it's easy to get great seats.
Sorry to hear about the loss of Christine Granath. The name sounds familiar. She graduated a year before me. Wish I would of bought my yearbooks! Dawn, if I had, I'd look you up. I bet we knew who each other was.
Also, I was thinking about some old art buddies of mine, people I had ceramics and/or crafts with at HHS. I was wondering if anyone knew where these people were now and if they kept doing their art....all of these people were extremely talented artists....Rick Ackles, class of 1978, my boyfriend for most of my junior year and all of my senior year, Chris Huerta, I believe class of 1973, Barbara Ramirez, class of 1977 and a hell of a good friend and bud, and last but not least, Brian Perry, class of 1978. Last I heard of Brian, Mark Escovedo (another very talented artist, he now works for Mattel) told me he married some woman in the wine industry in Northern Cal. Way to go, Brian! Drink up, buddy! = )

Thanks!!! I knew Norv still existed, but wasn't sure about Jim!!!!! You were talking about the chlorine smell in the locker rooms. I can remember wondering if taking a shower was really getting rid of the chlorine. Ray Nelson - I understand your confusion of the sun over the ocean being sunrise. Everytime I'm on the East Coast, I get North and South confused because the sun is "supposed" to be in the West when you see the ocean. Well, back to my grandkids. Also Brian Wilson was in town for a concert, as will be the Beach Boys band (lead by Al Jardine ) Even at my age I still play the Beboys on the boat, right up to our Thanksgiving, which is much earlier than the US, being Oct 8th., Then you have to disassemble your entire summer and pack it away for the next spring.
