Message: Yeah, John, jodhpurs (I just checked the spelling) .... You know, those funny looking pants that are tight (often with a zipper) on the lower part of the leg and blossomed out when they reached the upper thigh. I'm sure the equesterians (especially polo players) out there know what they look like. When I was much, much younger, they were in fashion for youngsters (boys & girls). I believe the fashion was adapted from a type of garment worn in a part of India with a name that sounded something like "jodhpur". Just another one of those silly fashions that have come and gone.

Message: I don't think we're dying here in feedback, I think it is a case of the summer blast affecting our typing abilities. This town of Coalinga where the "cats walk across the street trying to commit suicide" is too darn hot for the cats to walk, or anything else to be done. And now they are talking about cutting back our electricity. There is something about 110 degree weather that makes a person not mind the chore of having a swimming pool in the backyard.
I don't remember the philip morris "johnny", but I sure remember being a safety. I wish I still had one of those white crossing guard "strap" uniforms. I'd put it over my crossing guard vest when school starts in a couple of weeks. Somewhere I still have my Safety Pin. Saw one in an antique shop about a year ago (I resent the idea that I must be an antique if I wore one of those) it was for sale for about $12. Thanks for the Kirkland info Mo, and Glenn - Jim and I hope to go stomping, but we're planning a trip to Eurpoe and may have to forego the stomping depending on when it happens. John - I still plan on sending you that picture of the Bell's.

Message: Marilyn Ross, I remember the Philip Morris ads that used a page (Call for Philip Morris). That was before smoking became politically incorrect. I like to watch the old reruns on Nick at Night and TV Land where the characters light up and smoke and it seems perfectly natural.
If the safety guy that they rolled out had on jodphers, then he was specifically designed to be a crossing guard. I have seen a few of these "guys" for sale lately and just recently saw an old industrial catalog advertising them.
jodphers??!!

I'd rather log on and see last week's feedback than go through that again. I say this with much love ~ "lawyers, what do they want?" Glenn Crist, let me say this on the cuff while Janny's at work. Jan wants to return to Sonoma in Sept to work the vineyards in 90 degree heat, picking grapes for 8 hours for a bottle of wine.. says he likes to get his hands in the good earth. oiy ve...is that still happening? I'm afraid that if I have to don a babushka and a ruffled blouse and skirt with some long hoop earrings that my Italian heritage and lack of a green card will get me a one way ticket back to Italy. oiy again.. Sitting here sipping a cold glass of KR Rosato di Sangiovese and I open CT and there's Mo out trying to line up a job as a wine merchant. JB2 she's trying to score that tasting room job you've been lusting after. JB1 & J2 & J3 & JB4 (you figure out who's who), MT, CB, and Grappaman (and all the others who wannabe cellar rats), start practicing your Grape Stomp. Mr. Baker can most likey suggest an appropriate 50's tune to put you in an appropriate space. Veration has started and the first of the grapes should ripening about mid-September. I'll put out a call closer to the time when it'll all get rolling. Oops, I almost forgot about Myrna B, her hubby Jim, and Gordo... we will age our wines longer than a week...
I headed off to PA tomorrow to a family reunion and will be back on the 14th.
Have a glass for me when I'm gone friends,
Glenn

John I think joke Tuesday is something we should have maintained and kept alive here at cougartown. But you and JUDY SHUDY what was that? Said no so it isn't. Then I said sports Wednesday and you and Judy Wanny said no, then you spend the rest of the year trying to figure out what happens in the dead times. Message: Hey all you Cougars! Just got back from a week at the river for my Birthday. Had to catch up on the feedback and post some too. First of all Keith Jones if you are in town why don't you come to cruise night at Fosters? Cerritos isn't that far. I live in Garden Grove and am offering to swing by and pick you up on the way. Email me if you want me to. Secondly, about crazy Mary... When I graduated I went to work for Dr. Holechek (a dentist) in Hawthorne. Well guess who one of our patients was? You got it! Crazy Mary. She had only one tooth in her mouth, a molar that by rights should have been pulled with all the others. She said that if we pulled that tooth the devil would take over her body and kill her. we had made dentures for her with a hole so that her tooth would fit through them. She had a good repore with an old lady that worked in the office and she was the only one that Mary would let take her Xray on that tooth. Well one day Dolly, the older lady wasn't in and I had to take the Xray. You talk about being scared!!! I was afraid to look at her up close much less put my fingers in her mouth. I finally took the darn Xray and everything was okay. We once again filled the tooth and she was one her way. If you all remember she carried a little transistor radio with her and held it up to her ear all the time. She once told Dolly that she can hear the CIA on there and she has to know what they are up to because they wanted to nab her and get information from her because she had been a spy for many years. This is a true story I didn't make this up. And as far as he girl who wrote that she was related to her, I can't tell if she was serious or not but if you were what was Mary's last name? Well, that's all folks have to go do a weeks worth of laundry so I can be at Foster's Saturday.

Message: I haven't read feedback for a few days and found all the discussion of the local colorful people interesting. I wonder if anyone is old enough to remember a guy that lived by the railroad tracks east of Hawthorne Blvd. We called him Mr. Piano. I don't even know if that was his real name. He had a lot of stone work around the house and statues. Rumor said his wife's ashes were in one of the statues in the front yard. You just knew if he ever caught you, you would never be seen again. His house was real spooky. He was probably a very normal man. I also remember the blind broom man. He wasn't spooky though just a very nice man. Does anyone remember the wooden Phillip Morris "Johnny" that was used at York School as a crossing guard. He held a stop sign. The "safety" would roll it out into the street by a very long wooden pole to stop the traffic on Prairie. I'm not sure when they stopped using it. Does anyone even remember the Phillip Morris "Johnny" used to advertise cigaretts.?
See you all Saturday!

Message: Hey John boy.. I don't know what the fuss is about..you're not dying in CT at all.. but I'll bite. How about a short trip down memory lane to remind you of things that were happening only one short year ago..
First off: Very few of us had even met you yet.. The ROWDYS were hot and heavy into comparing stories about who's peed in a sink or took a footbath in a urinal..(now qualifications to be ROWDY) Jim Sloey was fighting off a case of E.D. The donations for the Nyman Hall seats were coming in. Marsha and I were solo ROWDY GIRLS..Robin Hood was coming into town and no one knew where he was staying or when he'd appear. (Robin Hood jokes forever) I fell flat on my face 2 days before Cruise night..ugh. And I was just getting my first email from my now husband Janny Wanny Chicken Fanny. Oh ya.. you had a surprise birthday brunch at El Torito.. where we finally met the B girls and Mom B. and..last but not least, many, many Cougs found each other again for the first time in 30 - 40 years ..and all at FOSTERS CRUISE NIGHT! How about the Oct HOMECOMING GAME.. My boob job & all those boobie jokes..(am I allowed to say that?) Then there was the famous "dinner at the Spot" which prompted the famous "pig out at Pinks" oiy! The parties, Hawaii, becoming Jewish, (don't ask) The rest is history big guy.. Thanks for the great year..one of many.. we're gonna die together.. ( hey, I heard that!!) Now, I have to lather myself down with Coppertone self tanning lotion and get rid of this farmer's tan before Sat. night.. Love you John Boy..you made a big difference in our lives.. Message: Well I'm in LA having some meetings. Look like everything is going to be great with my company Purely Hawaiian. So, when you see it on TV or on the shelves be sure to pick it up. We are going into several different fields including Kona coffee, ice cream, sun tan lotion, clothing, and many many others. Sorry for the plug John. In regards to Carla Pasch (my cousin) please tell her to call me or email me. Haven't seen her in a couple of years. I last heard from her friend (Edelbrock's Daughter) that she moved down south somewhere. My new office will be in Dove's Canyon so I might be close to her. I'll be coming to LA more often now and hopefully can hook up with some of my old buddies. By the way if you thought her house was fun and nice in Hawthorne you should have seen the one in Rolling Hills. She's quite a jet-setter. This town has changed. I'm staying in Cerritos which is nice. Going to Tijuana on Sunday then back to Vegas.
Hey Keith, we missed you around here man. No problem on the commercial. Just send all the Hawaiian freebies to:

Message: John, Cougartown is great. I've been reading for a long time, but this is my first contribution. Just wanted to add my condolences to Don DiTomasso on the passing of his dad. My husband and I did some dancing with Mr. & Mrs. DiTomasso a few years back. Also, please pass the sympathies on to his sister, Lila (class of 72). She was a friend. We had a fun PE class together her senior year.
Oh, I also lived on Stacy Street for the first 23 years of my life. Two doors down from Gina Black and her sisters. The coolest was going out the back gate onto the railroad track. We used to look for Coca-Cola bottles to return to Thriftimart for 2 or 3 cents. Then we took our money to Aloha Drugs or Gilberts 5 & 10 for a bag of candy. Or, we'd walk up the track to the HHS swimming pool and swim all afternoon with friends for a dime. Those were the days when you didn't have to have an adult with you every minute. Just the neighborhood kids. Fun summers. Thanks for the memories, CT.
Hey Debbie, Thank YOU for the memories, and now that you've gotten your feet wet, come on back anytime.

E-mail me and I will give you Carla's phone number, O.K. I'm sure she won't mind. You're an old bud of hers, too and she was hysterically happy to hear from me! Maybe you can get together with us, too, do you remember Valerie Rosauer from Dana? She used to play in the Dana talent shows all the time. I haven't heard from Carla in about 20 years. Tell her I think of her every time I hear "Baby Elephant Walk." Have fun getting together.
To Dale Halbeck: Thanks for taking the time to look up my brother, and I won't hold it against you for not spelling my name correctly (everyone does it). You were my favorite prom date.
To Harry Plotkin: It warms my heart to see your name on the screen. The only time I ditched school in junior high was when I had a bad headache and still wanted to go to drama practice. I went to Carla's house to take a nap, missed math class and you called my mom to see where I was. I got in trouble, but not because I ditched school, I got in trouble because my mom felt silly. She said the next time I wanted to stay home from school to just tell her and she would write a note. That set the tone for the rest of my time in junior high and high school. I also remember baking a cake in a shoebox in the microwave at lunchtime for your Birthday. We were the first on our block to get a microwave oven and I was learning how to use it. Sounds like you are doing well.
