Message: I want to support Carol McClintock Shih, in her article of 1/26, I too find talk about rotating tires boring. Personally "Pinks," was never on my hot list of things to do, while attending HHS. I thought this site was to share memories of growing up in Hawthorne, and having the privilidge of going to HHS. I also thought it was a chance to catch up with old friends, not have PSA announcements. I hear enough of that crap on T.V., that is why I don't watch much of that stuff either. I see things haven't changed much in the 20+ years since I left HHS. The people that I hung around with weren't the "A," list of HHS. We weren't the jocks, the prom queens, or the Ra Ra's. We were just average kids, out to have a good time. The school probably wouldn't have shut down, if we didn't show up on a daily basis. But, we have fond memories and opinions about what happened then too. I must say one thing through this site I have been able to reunite with some very dear people from my years at HHS, such as Carol. I also, have managed to find my old locker mate and partner in crime at HHS Donna Billingsly Phillipi. I guess our memories and antic's aren't important enough to make it to this site. Such as painting a certain guys locker pink as a joke. Or the tricycle campaign to help Cherie' Parks run for Christmas Queen. Or inviting one of the most popular guys of the class of 74', to my installation as Worthy Advisor (president) in Rainbow on a dare. Or a certain party with a purple rum "flavored" cake and warm coors beer. These kind of memories are trivial to the "A", list as everyone else did not count. Also, you have been ignoring one major landmark in Hawthorne. The Masonic Center on Grevillea and Broadway. Yes, it is still there. But, what you forgot during the 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's, there were 6 youth organizations that met there. DeMolay, Rainbow for Girls, and Job's Daughters. These groups had many members who were Cougars, also these groups had many activities that shaped the town.
Yes, thanks Polly for bringing up the Masonic Temple. It stands today, like it did in 1949 when my parents wanted me to be a tap dancer and that's where I took my lessons.
Also your memories are just as important as anyone else's. We need to hear more from the people that don't check in so often. Thanks for the memories tonight Polly, and please keep them coming.

Message: Just a quick note to prove that I do check in regularly. Having no computer at home, and being inundated with work at work, I haven't had free time to contribute much lately. Pink's!!! Yummy! I remember getting a craving for one, back when I was in college. We'd load up a car full of folks at about 11:00 p.m. and drive from Redlands (due west on the 10 fwy) to get those tasty, messy, inexpensive, delightful dogs. And lots of chili, please. I'll try to plan to be there for the next weekend rondezvous. Thanks for the memories.
Ingrid, You won't be sorry, and now you don't have to come from Redlands. Let's make it Saturday night, February 12th.

Message: To Don, that webcam from Hennessey's on Hermosa Pier is VERY cool. Having spent so much of the summers of my alcohol-assisted formative years down at Hennessey's and at the Lighthouse, it inspires me to order up a pint of Guinness every time I take a peek.
To Patty V5, I can think of a few more ways that life is different for you between life at 43 and life at 17. For one, you were merely beautiful at 17, but now at 43 you are both beautiful AND cunning as well. For another, when you were 17, you answered more of my email than you do now that you're 43.
To Bob, I'm glad you have a son in high school too, they're the only people around who can find thesauruses on the internet.
To Chuck Currie and of course Cindy, or to Cindy Currie and of course Chuck, are you still reading? If so, you should check in. I wonder how your fabulous daughter's doing, and if you're planning to go to Napa. I hear there's a big party at Ted's...I'll give you the address later. (Just don't tell Ted about it yet.)
And lastly to John, if I see you at Pink's next time, I'll expect to also see you sipping strawberry soda.

I'll do it in your honor joseph. Thanks, and be a Coug boy. Patty doesn't answer your mail either? I feel much better.

I didn't start going to Tommy's until after high school. In '71-'72, the place to go was Bob's Big Boy on Century and Hawthorne in Inglewood and Farrell's Ice Cream in Torrance at the base of PV. I will never forget Nancy Petros's (4'9") face when I jokingly asked for a highchair for her and the waiter actually picked her up and put her in it.
Hey, Joe Mailander, nice letter about Pink's. I love LA history. But thank heavens my kids went to the high school they did so I could ask them what some of those words meant.
Hey, Robin, by the way I just read that another THAT school "3rd year senior" football player just committed to University of Oregon. That now makes 3 players (Herman Ho-Ching, Sammy parker, and now Marley Tucker) from THAT school now playing for UofO. With my son playing at Portland State, maybe we should now call Oregon "Poly North". I guess UofO had to lower their entrance requirements like Stanford, huh? Thank heavens USC lowered their requirements also so that Kareem Kelly could play or they may never won a game this season.

Message: Wow, Ernie's on the Tonight Show, Dan's at Pink E's, Keith's hangin' out with Ali, Olivia is kickboxing intruders, and I'm just working as a day labourer. Oh well. I get to live vicariously through CT. Here's one more item for the young lady who wishes she were a part of HHS history rather than in the leading edge of making it: I remember wondering about what the year 2000 would bring and not imagining what I would be like in my 40's. Unlike my sister I didn't have a haircut like Mrs. B until recently :0), but I did think the moccasins, the flare jeans, the sweater sets and the floppy leather hats would never make much of a cultural statement. I guess the biggest difference between 43 and 17 is that I now know I'm making history everyday and when I look back on my 40's (as I certainly hope to one day) I will think of how much fun I had wearing the odd outfits of today. But I'll probably still be trying to erase from my memory ice cube sitting contests.
Yeah, "Ol' Glacier Glutes" is correct when she says you're making history EVERYDAY. You have a proud history at HHS. Seize it, because like it or not, you're a part of it.
