Class: 55
Message: Message: Hi John!
I've checked out the site a bit, and haven't found a posting earlier than 1960. I belonged to the class of 1955, the first class that actually went through Hawthorne from start to finish. The first class to graduate from HHS was in 1954, but they spent their first year on another campus.
I am Bob Rierdan's older brother. When the campus opened in 1950, there was nothing but the buildings--no trees no grass, and in the winter, no dry ground. There was many a dirt clod fight--there was plenty of dirt to fight with. I remember being brought in to face Max Chance, our first vice-principal, after a particularly aggressive exchange of dirt. I don't remember the precise number of swats--more than one and less than ten--but I couldn't sit down for several hours afterwards.
After a year or so of this, it occured to the district that perhaps all this early teen exuberance could be used to develop the campus. In 1951, Work Day was initiated. Each year, one day was set aside in which the student body was mobilized to clean, level and plant on the campus so that we would no longer look like the aftermath of an A-Bomb attack, an issue of great concern at the time.
Most of the legendary teachers you mention started with us--many learned on us, actually. When Mr. Harvey taught his first Algebra class, he was still wearing his Navy uniform from service in Korea.
I was in Clara McGinty's class that designed the first El Molino. I was responsible for the theatrical page. Clearly why I went into another career than journalism.
I guess this is just a get-acquainted-teaser, John. I have much to tell and describe about the early, early years. Let me know if this is of interest to you..
Note: Dick, Hey it's of interest to all of us. Please go on. In fact right up your remembrances and I will put them on the Recollections Page. Thanks Dick for checking in and thanks for getting up here and saying your piece. Your brother is a good friend and a great contributor to this site, as you probably know. He's responsible for much of the slang page, and lately, has added the Alma Mater to the Home page. Now everyone's getting involved.

Message: Has anybody else noticed how Robert Beltran ("Chicote"-sp??) on "Star Trek Voyager" looks EXACTLY like Mr. Bravo did in the sixties?? Sure wish Mr. Bravo would come online, now that we know he's living at the beach. He's GOT to have a computer...
Note: Kathleen, How are you doing girl?? I've missed you here lately. Yeah, Cmon Alex and say a few words if you're out there. We need to hear from some teachers. Actually THE COACH has been missing for some time too.

Message: To:John - "Can't remember what was there before the mall?????" Come on! How about the Plaza Theater, all those crazy traffic Circles with the half dead palm trees. Muntz Stereo, Winchell's and the Slot car track across the street. I KNOW your memory isn't THAT far gone.;-)
Alan

Note: Oh Yeah.....now it's all coming back. Thanks Alan. Actually I grew up on Cedar Av between 122nd and Broadway, so I better remember what was there.

Message: Come on! One look at the Alumni List, depicts a still wimpy representation from the class of '81'. Don't let John's page scare you off. Those Cougars who have a hard time remembering when the mall WASN'T there are STILL welcomed. As for my buds......a PC!.....Ya right! They can be excused. The remainder of you have deminished excuses. Much like the hairlines?
Note: Shannon's Right also. Everyone's welcome on this site. Come on 81ers, get your names on the list. BTW, I remember when the Mall wasn't there, I just can't remember what was there before the mall.

Message: It's really great to see all you youngsters on our site! I've just been wondering why some of the oldsters haven't been writing lately. We need to hear from the '50s group. We can't let these kids out talk us!!! Where are you "old" Cougars? Let's keep in touch and let the youngun's know we're here too!!! It is great to see so many enjoying the get-together on the internet. It's so much fun to read all the responses when someone finds one they knew in school, but haven't heard from in so long. We really do have a bond through our high school and, to me, you all feel like kin.
Note: Karen, I agree. It's great that the mid 70's Cougars have found one another, and are utilizing the Feedback Page to the max. However, I know there're some of "US" out there. 50's and 60's Cougars, get up here and make yourself known.

I've moved so far away and so many things have changed for me since my HHS days. I look forward to the occasional connection to these precious memories.

I can still see Wayne Dickey in his lowered Grand-Prix with the surfboard sticking out the back side window headed for TWO-SIX! This thing sure brings back the memories.

While you're all out there trying to find lost souls, how about Mike Maguire, Becky Shuck, Sue Carrol, Karen Bertelsen (Coug).........? Message: Being connected via Mr. John Baker is an absolute thrill. I'm sure most will agree that the days at HHS in any year were some, if not the best years of their lives. We aren't getting any younger and I encourage everyone to sign-on and let it out. Just getting a handshake and hug from my classmates at the 35th yr. reunion was heartwarming. To see the people who really mean a great deal and to exchange was cool, but John Baker has added the ease to communicate via his daily efforts and the thrills of hooking up to friends of the past is great. Thanks John, my friend of years past and the renewal of friendships to the feature. I love my life, Gods been good to me and provided, single as a street rod and truck publisher for a national publication and living in La Verne, CA. Driving a '65 Cobra is worth getting up for in the AM and traveling the country (part of the job) is a way to say hi to the HHS'ers out there. Let me know how to get in touch with you. E-mail or call toll free 888-231-2272 for sharing the good ole times and some new ones too. Regards to all.
