Message: Mike Shay's mention of the "Queen for a Day" show dredged up another memory..... When we moved to California in 1961, my mother wanted to go and see in person all the game shows that she watched on TV. Problem was that all the folks that had lived in the area for any length of time had better things to do than that. So my mother used to write notes to the office to get me out of school at HHS to go with her. The day we went to "Queen for a Day" she filled out a card and was chosen to be a contestant along with someone named Hilda who just happened to also be from Hawthorne. My mother was not the big winner (I don't remember who was) but she and Hilda became friends. Hilda was a hair dresser and after that she always did my mother's hair, I believe she had a small shop in the back of her home.

Miaaka can't get here, has to work, Shannon I am not sure of, Tim lives in Washington state and my AfS kids are all too far away. With or without them I plan to be there as long as nothing comes up to stop me and will sit on Hawthornes side even though I graduated from Inglewood. It's still my school and so is Hawthorne so I will just root for both quietly. See you there.

Did you recognize Tom Shelley's mom in the 1957 picture of the cafeteria staff? She was really nice. She was a big winner on the old "Queen For A Day" show. That was just about the time of my very first freshman day at H.H.S. I was walking down the hall right next to Senior Square and Tom's older brother Ray decided that I should do a light buff and a detail to his shoes.....
That was my very first experience at High School....I hope he swells up!!
Who's getting married??
Where's Richard Hanson??
M.S.
Mike, Yes I saw her in that picture. I think she worked in the Cafeteria for only a couple of years.
I became very adept at the "light buff, no polish" thing when I was a freshman too. I thought maybe I'd actually take it up as a profession, as I did get plenty of practice, learned my craft, and actually had Seniors being referred to me by OTHER Seniors. Hey, when you have a bag of lemons, you make lemonade........Thanks Mikey

Does anyone remember the Garrett House in West Hollywood? Can't remember the name of the woman who played guitar and sang (folk songs), but she was really talented and quite humorous too. She would often stop in the middle of a song and joke about being drowned out by the espresso machine making its loud sucking noises. The java huts of the 90's have nothing on the Garrett House's cappuccinos - those were the days my friends!

Message: Just a few thoughts about the Surf Music of our time. First, I have to say that I'm probably the biggest fan of this music in the world. Everybody, of course, knows of the Beach Boys and Jan and Dean. But there is so much more there. The creator of Surf Music is Dick Dale, he started playing it in 1956. Dave Mayers of the Surftones said it best, "Surf Music was a pure sound of its own." Our own Chris Montez wrote a surf song called "Shoot that Curl" performed by Chris and Kathy.
A group called the Crossfires, who did Fiberglass Jungle, were from Westchester and later became the Turtles.
Glen Campbell and Leon Russell played with many surf bands, too. There is so much of this music out there and I just love it, especially the instrumentals. I listen to it everyday. There's so much energy in it. I won't bore you all with it anymore, but there must be a nut or two out there who likes it as much as I. It was a neat little sub culture. By the way, Jimmi Hendrix took guitar lesson's from Dick Dale.
