Message: Dave Roelen , it makes me excited that someone from my brothers group of friends would write an intro such as that about the introduction of our, maybe I can say it, The California way of life as we knew it, in the 50's and early 60's. It's good to hear from you, whenever you wrote it. I wish I could get my brother to write a line or two about some of you guys shananigans. But, alas he's mute. I'm not. As most know. Good to see your Post! Hope you're all well. MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU! Jake N Jude. P.S. Give us a yell.

Message: David Roelen's wonderfully written article sure did capture the true essence of going to the beach in the 50s. Through his description, I could smell the beach, the french fries, and even feel the cold waves crashing over me, tumbling me along to the water's warmer edge. Aaah, the memories of the fun we had seeing our friends, joining them on their beach towels, talking about seeing someone special and possibly dating that someone. David, your article has set off flashbacks in my mind that will keep me remembering for at least the rest of the day ... probably for the rest of the month! JB, thanks for sharing that article with all of us on Cougartown.
Hi Karen, I feel the same way. Thanks to Denny Unfried for passing along the article.

Message: I just thought I would tell a story about when the parking lot was being built at the Cockatoo Inn. I was just a little guy while all of the construction of the Inn, parking lot, and the Lo coco's home was being built. As a little kid, I walked through all of them after the workers went home. The parking lot was a large construction site, between Acacia and Birch. I have know Jeff Fautt and Mike Webster (class of 75) since we were all 4 to 5 years old. The three of us were walking through the construction site right after a good rainy week. There was mud and puddles everywhere. We were about 9 yrs old at the time, and loved to splash in puddles like all kids do. As we were walking through the construction site, we all went to splash in a big puddle, when we found out the hard way, it was a footing for the columns. We all disappeared instantly. About 10' x 10' x 10' swimming pool's would have described it better than a puddle. We were laughing so hard we almost drowned. Have you ever been laughing so hard, you couldn't help yourself, yet alone your friend that was clawing on a straight up and down muddy slippery bank, trying to pull ourselves out of a muddy pool. It happened so fast we didn't care what our mothers would say when we got home, covered in mud. Life was so simple, when all we had to do was, not drowned, and get home in time for dinner.
Hey Rick, great Hawthorne story. Thanks a bunch...

Message: Does anyone remember Lococo's restaurant in Hawthorne? I thought is was owned by the Lococo family. I could be wrong. It was my parents most favorite restaurant. It was where we celebrated big occasions. The Moore family loved Lococo's restaurant. Again, I am not sure if it was owned by the same family. I could be all off on the name, but I don't think so.
Hi Sharon, same Lococo family....

Message: Correction on the name of Andy Lococo's Tuna Boat, It was called the "Margret L". Yes at one time it was the biggest in the US fleet and possibly the world. Mike Schuetze and John Lococo both worked on it. It was based out of San Diego, but unloaded it's catch in San Pedro. The Lococo family was and still is one of the most generous and loyal of any Hawthorne Family. Mr Lococo contributed a great deal to the organizations of Hawthorne and his family was very gracious in opening their home to the community for functions. Even today, son John and his family are still the same. John helps out the youth soccer organizations in the SD area as well as having a soccer shop in the OC. And when you see John and his wife Toni, they greet you with the warm friendly smiles, similar to their days at HHS. John's top shelf as is his family and he is carrying on the family tradition of being part of the community, helping people when in need and being active.
Thanks Wade for the update.

Message: The "Margie L" was the name of the boat. Named for Andy's wife. Mike Schutze, aka Captain Woody, worked on it. Just a suggestion: Many of us know the Lococo's from school, sports, being Friends of the family, or spending time at the Cockatoo Inn. Instead of agreeing with statements made in the Daily Breeze about suspicions from ages ago, we need to support our fellow townspeople and keep opinions to ourselves.

Message: Had a great 4th of July @ my cousin, Sally Myers Strunk's (also class of 1971) home in Chatsworth at their block party. We had a fun time!! Also, a few weeks ago Kathy Waggoner Edwards (1971) was at the baby shower given for my 2nd daughter, Sharon. She and I both did daycare in our homes and often traded hours watching each other's children. She was one of the first girls I met in 4th grade when I was the new kid @ Peter Burnett, the first was Ellen Pansky. Take care and enjoy your summer!!
Thanks Karen

Message: Was wondering if any of you older grads who knew the Lococo family remembers the name of his (father) fishing boat. If I remember right it was the largest tuna boat in the world. It could stay out at sea for up to six months. I am pretty sure it was Mr. Lococo who owned it or someone from around there
I'm sure someone knows, Keith. Anyone have this answer?

Message: I read the post by Betty Rodriguez that that mentioned 33rd St. in Manhattan. It became one of the Hawthorne beaches about 1961. There wasn't a huge crowd everyday but to about thirty Cougars that was their home beach. A few people that came to mind were Ray Gorospe, Ron Aronson, Bob Curran, Gerry and Mike Bierman, Doug Kinn, Kenny Edwards, Lon Michaelson, Sherry Brown, Linda Lopez, Sandy Daquilla, Livvy Arias. Sue Kiester, Bob bazis, Rich and Phil Decuir. The amazing thing was that a lot of them ended up spending time in the Hawaiian Islands. Mostly in Kona on the big Island or Kauai. Some of them are still there. I spent twenty years in Kona. Fifteen of them as a charter boat captain fishing for blue marlin and ahi (yellowfin tuna).
And Linda Lopez turned into a very good pool player too. Thanks Jim....

Staying all day and getting that Rich Dark Suntan that I use to sport. Just hope that getting all that Sun, doesn't come and haunt me someday. We sure didn't use any sunscreen back then. Well everyone, have a wonderful 4th!
