Message: Hey guys..thanks for the mention of the PROUD BIRD...my bad on the street name. After I posted in feedback I realized...shoots..it's on Aviation....grrrr! I guess after spending nearly 20 yrs here in Portland, OR you tend to forget streets and places. One thing I never forget is going to LAX and park your car on a very small driveway that is link to the locked gates to the Landing lights towers and watch the planes come in and land on Aviation Blvd. You could probably fit 3 cars side by side but I guess you can't do that anymore in light of our threats by terrorism. Back then Cops would drive by and ignore us considering we were parked on private property. It was cool seeing 747 fly overhead and hear em jumbo engines roaring overhead. I tried a few time to throw a rock at em but missed (hey..I was only 10 yrs old at the time) but they seems so close! Now...I bet those days are long gone...be cool to take my daughter there and watch the planes fly overhead. I did that with her here in Portland Airport...totally fun! I taken a few dates to the WEST side (Ocean side) to watch the planes take off...well...not always watching(too busy necking)...but the street name...Grasshopper street..I believe...was a strange name. I was amazed homes used to be there in the 40's 50's before the jet age. As of streets in Hawthorne...OMG...I used to live on 116th street and Kornblum...so yer telling me that if I lived there now I be going to Morningside??? So chilling! Another note on Hawthorne city limits...I used to work at Taco Bell, across the street from HHS. One night we got robbed and I called the HPD..and they told me to call the Lennox Sherrif...to my shock and amazements...cuz Taco Bell was not more than a mile from HPD which it was located on Los Angeles County lines. Geeesh..don't you think after all these years Hawthorne city councils would push to annex those strips of L.A. county land? I mean..geeesh....it's HAWTHORNE!

Message: What about the poor folks that lived on the North Side of 116th and 115th? They had to call Venice for law enforcement/fire. For years, some kids ended up going to Airport Jr High and/or Lennox High. I'm glad they settled it in the 70's and everybody got to go to HHS! Just in time for the Century Freeway to knock 'em all down and really settle the matter.

Message: Hey Neil and Bob J.--I also grew up in Del Aire on 118th St and La Cienega. In the early days we actually had an Inglewood address. After the long delayed freeway took that house we moved to another no man's land, 126th and Tahoe (hi Lee and Norma!!). It is still considered an unincorporated part of Los Angeles County. I could never get any Hawthorne services there, told me I had to call the County, and we did have to call Sheriffs, very odd!!!

Message: The one thing you learned living in Del Aire was to call the Sheriffs office on Lennox Boulevard if you needed the authorities - not the Hawthorne Police Department. Now here is a question for you: If you currently live west of Sundale, south of 120th, east of the freeway (Tahoe) south of Stacy, who would you call ? the Hawthorne Police or the Sheriff?s Office? The best city map is the zoning map on City of Hawthorne website. The city boundary lines are very interesting.

Message: The Northwest corner of Hawthorne presently terminates at the intersection of the San Diego (405) and the Century (105) freeways. As JB mentioned, this has changed over the years and probably will continue to do so in the future. To obtain a complete geographical location for the city of Hawthorne take a look at the Wiki entry, or even better, find a recent Thomas Guide that will indicate even the small exceptions as there are many. My favorite exception was always the reason they setback the Cockatoo from Hawthorne Blvd. when it was rebuilt so it would completely be in the city of Hawthorne. According to my Thomas Guide, that was finally resolved and the city of Hawthorne extends past Imperial to 111th Street now.
Hey thanks Jerry....

Message: I can't believe my child did this to me. And Sue, if you hadn't made a comment I probably still wouldn't share this. I told my daughter that since I was quiet in school, and never had a car, I never did anything notable to share on feedback. Here is my "cute" story. Remember how the school clubs would sell Sees suckers to raise money? In Mrs. Mark's sophomore English class since I was quiet she sat me between some rowdy football players to keep them apart and quiet. One on each side, and in front and in back of me. They would take the wrappers off their suckers and throw the papers under my desk. I didn't have the nerve to say anything to the guys, so I would just pick the wrappers up. I didn't want to get in trouble for trash under my desk. I was sure they thought it was funny, and knew that I would never tell on them. I was actually embarrassed. Kinda wonder why I remember that happening.
Hey Connie, I think I knew those guys Thanks very much for the story. See, that didn't hurt a bit, so come on back anytime. I can't believe you never had a car when your brothers were big car guys and your dad had a Texaco station. Go figure....

Message: Dear John, In regards to the question that Ray Smith asked, I have a few clarifications and a question. John you were correct with the restaurant name "The Proud Bird" but Ray was incorrect with the location as it located on Aviation between Imperial Hwy. and Century Blvd. Ray also mentioned that it is "at the end of the LAX Airport? Is that the end or the beginning of LAX? Well, Aviation would the beginning of the runway except on a windy day when it becomes the end but technically we can call it the end since it is on the end perimeter of the airport I guess. So with that I have to ask this. Where does the City of Hawthorne begin and where does it end?
For future Proud Bird clarifications, it's located at 11022 Aviation Blvd. just north of 111th St. on the East side of Aviation. Not sure the exact city boundaries of Hawthorne as they've changed over the years, but I'll bet Jerry Miles, Chris Prewitt, or someone else can find that answer.

Message: The game plan for the Hawthorne airport was a hidden agenda - a hotel casino. A select few in and out of city politics had the points (including Fred Dwyer), but not the support from the community. A LAX hub never materialized, so the airport continues doing what it always has. Too bad the Hawthorne Air Faire went by the wayside due to the city's budget woes. I worked 8 years on the event and it was an awesome experience - got to fly in a P51, too. Those were the days!

Neil Larson, very good observation, however, it collectively fits most politicians to a tee. Also, were they really thinking of turning the Hawtorne Airport into a Mall? OOOHHH!!!, that's right, I forgot the first Hawthorne Mall, located on Hawthorne boulevard was such a great success and so busy with customers they needed another Mall to accommodate the overflow of shoppers LOL LOL LOL. Hey, John it's a slow day, what can I say, I have too much time on my hands LOL.
