Message: The boogy man of our youth, Fidel Castro has stepped down. I remember well the fear instilled in us by the nuns in 2nd grade at St Joes. Assume the position in the halls and pray that the Russians dont launch the 100 -megaton bomb at us. We were at ground zero in Haytown considering all the aerospace infrastructure within a few miles of us. Ol Fidel was a big part of that scene no doubt. Truly a facsinating character to be sure. Winds of change are in the blowing? we'll see. I ll smoke a big old Cuban cigar when and if they are readily availible. Message: I am also truly saddened to hear of Mr. Orrell's passing. He was an inspiration, turning me on to great fiction and great writers, including Ken Kesey's "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (which, at the time was on the sly, as it wasn't accepted in high schools). Mr. Orrell, undoubtedly the biggest reason I'm an English and Social Studies teacher today, was a great teacher. I again remember his compassion and empathy the morning after RFK's assassination when Orrell, aware of my discomfort, encouraged and allowed me to leave the classroom to grieve in peace. Message: Years ago there was a column in a San Francisco paper that I clipped because it was just too funny. It may have been by Art Hoppe, I just can't quite remember (that gets worse with every year). Among the mangled misunderstandings was one I do remember: "I led a pigeon to the flag."
