Message: To Dennis Kilroy: In your Aviation Little Picture of the 67 Colts standing next to you is yours truly. In the back row 2nd from the left from the coach is Eric Ellenberger. Eric and I along with Jack Vallembois were best friends through Sepulveda Elementary. Unfortunately, Jack's ball playing ability did not rub off on Eric and I and we were on the Colts for 2 years (66 and 67) and then on the Padres for 68 and 69. Does anyone remember playing ball at the North American Rockwell Recreation Park on Imperial Highway? Little tiny bats and balls. Also remember going there to learn to shoot a 22 rifle on the shooting range.

Message: My Dad worked for Mattel Toys for a long time. he would bring home toys no one had seen yet. i remember a Barbie that I asked my mom to dress in black leotards--this Barbie was the first bent knee doll- i took her to school and bent her knees and placed her on Mrs. Cable's desk--i waited to see her reaction--she LOVED her! another Barbie like this one was dressed like the drawing in Playboy magazine--long black gloves and black nylons--i don't know who did that one. and i remember Dad coming home with a talking Barbie--one English version and one Spanish version. (where are they now? can't find THEM on ebay)another talking doll--Chatty Kathy--at the Toy show someone slipped in a record in her back that did NOT come from the factory--it said lots of NAUGHTY things--"Men will be Boys" (probably forever)... my little brother and i really loved that job--I think my Dad did too.

Message: Major Cougar sighting yesterday. Attended coach Otto Plums' 80th birthday and met and talked with Rich Sloan(class of 60). A number of Hawthorne coaches and faculty were also in attendance. Alex Bravo(cross country and spanish), Sid Semon, Dave Chichester(science) and John Andrade (biology) were all enjoying the festivities. Dennis Lonner(sp?) football ballboy from 55-59 was also there so I picked up some HHS history during the day. I caught myself addressing Mr. Chichester and Mr. Andrade like they were still my teachers (force of habit but dang we had good manners back in the day!) A happy birthday shout out goes to Fellow 76er Kirk Greasby up in Colorado! Hope all is well on your turf Kirk!
Happy Birthday Coach Plum.

Message:Cougar Sighting! We were at the river on June 9th for the tube float (boy does Alan Nelson put on a good party) after Melanie and her cousin got back to our dock this guy jumps in and starts floating with the crowd on a surfboard. When he came back I asked him if he wanted to sell the surfboard. I told him I have the perfect spot for it in my back yard with the parking meter that I am going to put street signs on saying, 26th & Highland he laughed and I said I grew up in Hawthorne and he said he did too! It was John Wood from Class of 1978, John, Melanie and I talked for about 2 hours. It was great, but he still won?t sell the surfboard!

Message: I never worked at Mattel, but I did take a tour of their plant back in the early 1960s (probably in 1962) when it was located off of Aviation near 120th Street. It was either a school field trip or through the Cub Scouts. I managed to tour a lot of places back in the day: the OLD Griffith Park Zoo, Superior Honey, the Long Beach Naval Station, L.A. Harbor, Jungleland, L.A. County Museums, etc.

Message: I took Homemaking because the cooking classes were fun. In my Jr. year, we traded cooking class with the boys in the woodshop. They cooked and we made the dumbest looking salad bowls. Our teacher took off every day, left us alone with all the power tools and machines running and did not come back until our class was over. We found out later that he took off to get a few brewskies. I imagine we "ladies" drove him to those desperate measures.

Message: It is sooooo much fun to read the FEEDBACK here. I THANK YOU SO MUCH, JOHN! As far as "boy only" and "Girl only" classes go--I did NOT want to take HOMEMAKING--but I was forced into it. I think a counselor forced me--I was told "you will just graduate and get married anyway--u HAVE to take this course!" Well, I was raised by a real "REBEL" of a Mom--and I didn't get married until the ripe old age of 21--I graduated at 16 1/2. Mr. Molitor made me a 10 buck bet--and I won it! he said " I will give U $10 if u come back here in 10 mos. and u are NOT married" I came back in a few years NOT MARRIED - to collect my money. I could NOT find him--Mr. Molitor, if u are out there--U-O-ME.......and as far as MARRIAGE or being SINGLE goes--neither one is anything like its cracked up to be. and u can quote me on that one (gee, I feel like Yogi Berra)
I would've lost that bet.

Message: Hi all it's been awhile, no excuse except it's better reading some of your stories and reminiscing on mine then, but of few things come to mind.
1. Mattel Toys, I lived down the street from them on Oceangate and 134pl. Anyway, in the evening when they closed a bunch of us kids would go there and climb the fence as they had to secure the plastic recycled toys that didn't meet quality inspection. Got alot of neat things from there.
2. In the picture articles last week on Iraq there is one on the red horse brigade. I only mention this cause my nephew is in it.
3. I remember being at a Cruise Night a year our two ago and this guy walks up to me, puts his arm around me and says I know you, you're Dean Karels. Now his face was familiar but I hadn't seen this person in 40 plus years. Turns out to be Steve Fraser, and when I heard of his mishap I've been adding his name to my daily pray list. And last, John, the check is in the snailmail this coming week.
Hey Deano, I was wondering where you got off to. Thanks for the Hawthorne stuff and also the "June Is Cougartown Dues Month" check.
