Message: Happy First Day of Summer JB! I'm loving the 14 hours and 51 minutes of daylight today. I'm also going to a Sacramento River Cats baseball game tonight after work. The weather up her looks great for the next few days.....predicted high for today is only 90 degrees. I've been thinking about some of the toys we all used to play with (don't ask me why)..... Mr.Machine, Erector sets, Twister, tops, Duncan yoyos, Slinky, and wasn't 1957 the year that Wham-O came out with the Hula Hoop? How many of us remember our childhood toys? What was in your toy chest?
A Remco Burp Gun, Baseball Cards, Fanner 50 with greeny stickum caps, Erector Set, lots of Monogram Model Cars, and a Red Ryder BB gun.

Message: Our dad also worked at North American Aviation/Rockwell at General Offices. He worked in the Photo Lab. Always had good stories - my favorite is how they would pressure him to get the work done faster. His response to the 'suits' - do you want it done fast, or do you want it done right? Their response - both! He worked there 21 years, and collected his pension for 28 years. Now thats beating the system. Drove by the house on Sundale last week - looks great! They also put a stop sign on Sundale right in the middle of the block. Nice! And they've done some nice landscaping at the school along Broadway. Very pleased to see that. Betty
Thanks Betty...

Message: Karen, you were lucky to be able to get into an "All Boys" class. I wanted so badly to get into printing while in school but it was all boys then. As soon as I graduated and turned 18, I got a job at North American Aviation at the General Offices as an apprentice pressman. In 1964, I moved to Connecticut where I landed a job in printing and I believe (as my boss told me) I was the only woman in that field on the whole east coast!! No one had ever heard of a woman running an offset printing press. But they still made me wear a dress or skirt to work, no jeans or slacks allowed. We've come a long way, baby!! KK

Message: I loved the video about Kaziah's paintings. What a great lady. I lost a son at age 25 - not in the war - so I have a real understanding how special those paintings must be. Our high school just purchased an "American Heros" banner. The kids collected change and raised the $1000.00 for the banners. It is a group that is trying to make a banner for every fallen serviceman in Iraq. You get one for the school, one for the family and one that will eventually go around in a traveling show to all the states with all the banners in a displaly. It has a candid shot of the serviceman and information about him. Ours had a 19 year old man and when I saw it, boy the emotions come out.

Message: My mom worked for North American/Rockwell for 40 years, but was only given credit for 38, because she was laid-off twice. She was in Management, and refused to retire until she was 70. During 12 of those years she also worked as a Lennox Sheriff Deputy. What a dynamic powerhouse she was. I was engaged to a South High guy who worked at NCR, if that counts.

Thanks so much for sharing it with everyone. Sonia

I don't remember seeing Jim Peppers there but that's understandable since he was a guy. (I remember pretty girls much easier than guys) Sorry Jim!...BUT I did happen to get a copy (on CD) this past week, of one of your dad's favorite groups..."Ken Loran and the Lorals"...Only 7 songs, but Wow! I had forgotten how great they were!...David

Message: Here's a good question. How many people on this site worked at "National Cash Register"(NCR). The company was at that time (60's) located on I believe El Segundo Blvd, east of Hawthorne Blvd.. I worked there several times as an Electro Mechanical Design Draftsman, as a (Job Shopper, Contract Employee). I worked in the engineering department for a Chief draftsman by the name of George Block if memory serves me right. After working at several different aerospace companies i.e. NCR, TRW, HAC, NORTRONICS and others, I saw the writing on the wall, after observing the way the companies treated their employees. They would lay off their own employees and give their jobs to contract employees who were there as temps. and getting a higher wage. Subsequently, I joined the Sheriff's Dept. and had a great career without having to worry about getting laid because a contract ended.
Hey George, Dad worked for Northrop for 30 years (1939-69) (Nortronics the last 15 years of his career) and was never laid off. At that time, Northrop had never had a layoff.

Message: That was a very touching video. That's very generous of her to touch the lives of those families loved ones and then ask for nothing in return. Her payback is their gratitude and happiness. There still are thoughtful people out there in this mixed up world. God Bless her.

Message: Dear Cougars, Read about Sonia and David working at NCR. I too worked at NCR from ?61 to ?63 or ?64. We were located on Imperial Ave. if memory serves me well. I became something of an issue because when they hired me I was just 17, but everything worked out. I was a scheduler when I left. Can?t for the life of me remember any names though. I do remember that my boss told me that I was wasting my time and that I needed to get a degree if I wanted to get ahead. I suppose that got me going on a lifelong pursuit of knowledge. Sonia or David, do you remember seeing me there? When I was an expediter, I was all over the place. Jogged the old memory cells here, but they?re a bit clogged. Have a great summer everyone. Jim Peppers

Message: I don't ever want this site to become divided, politically, so I don't ever add Iraqi war stuff here, and neither should you. This, however needs to be out there. I received this from Elizabeth Aleccia this morning and I can't stop watching this. If this doesn't bring a tear or two, you are from some other planet. For those using dialup, please get cable or DSL, or go to your grandkids house to watch this. If ever someone should be Sainted, it's Kaziah Hancock. Click here for the movie.

Message: John...I just now read Sonia's post. Wow! Sonia and I had the same boss (Bob Mathers) back in the days at NCR. Bob, maybe had the title of "Boss" but it was Sonia who ran our Department, everyone knew that! I was a Leadman in the printed circuit board area and one of my many tasks was to check and sign all the time-cards and get them to Sonia by 9 AM...Well, I was always late! Our Building was being remodeled at one point (new digs for Sonia and Bob) there was a temp. wall which Bob and Sonia's desks where (during construction and my desk was on the other side of the 6ft. high wall...rather than walking around the wall, Sonia would throw a note over the top tied on a piece of string to remind me to get her the time cards OR ELSE! I'd attach my note back to her saying, "Yes Boss! I'm working on them"...I sure remember how pretty Sonia was...Wow! Everyone should have a Boss as pretty as she! I haven't seen Sonia since the company moved me to San Diego in 1968...Too Cool to see her post on here! (Hi Sonia!)...David
We are ALL tied together, somehow. Thanks Dave....

Message: I am in town for a trade show and went on campus today. How depressing!!! Dead grass, trash everywhere, the school needs paint. That new cafeteria looks like it doesn't fit with the campus and where is senior square? I thought it would be cool to go there and remember the good times. Could seem to do it after seeing everything. Anyway if any 76er's want to get in touch while I am here give me a call 303-883-4459.
Hey Jim, Looked GREAT about 2 months ago. Old Senior Square is gone to make room for the Cafeteria, but will be resurrected.
