Message: John, Jeanne Hays is correct. You can remove the ? from her photo. Noreen, you are correct, Cindy was the actress - check out her "glam" photo in the 3rd grade. You should see her photo in the fourth grade. I sure hope everyone in that photo that graduated from HHS does attend the reunion in August. I'm looking forward to it.

Message: My sisters, Roni and Peggy, and I were on Family Feud with our Mom and Grandmother back in 1977 (I think that was the year). We lost and didn't get to the lightning round. Our last question was "What do you ride for a thrill"? We got all but 1 answer before 3 strikes, and then the other team got the last answer ... a horse. I'm still bitter. Who rides a horse for a thrill? We did win $69, a weed whacker and some pots and pans as our consolation prizes. At the time I had Mr. Andrade in Biology, so I was focused on science. When trying out for the show, I was asked "What comes in pairs"? Now a normal person might say socks or shoes, right? I answered "chromosomes". Hopefully Mr. Andrade would be proud.

Message: My first money earning venture was sifting the sand with a sand crab catcher at Manhattan or Hermosa beaches. I would make between $1.00 to $5.00 on average depending on how much of an area I would sift. One day I sifted up a folded up $20 bill, I thought I struck it rich. Then when I was 15 1/2 I worked for Harry's (?) mens store on Hawthorne Blvd till my first paycheck. I made a whopping $5.00 for the week so I went back to surfing and sifting sand.

Message: The only horses I knew of in Del Aire were both on 116th Street. Bob Walker's kids (Barry and Stephanie Maiden) tried to have a horse of some sort in their backyard one summer and they attracted horse flies like this area has never seen! And another time I was standing outside the Hawthorne's garage and a pony escaped from a family about two doors down from the Walker's. I guess 116th Street was zoned for horses, LOL. I used to go on fundraisers to game shows, mostly with the Diaconians'. Elissa Rosen (77) was on the Price is Right in the late 70's.

Message: Marilyn Ross brings up a good point, and this might open a big ol' comparison debate....but, what about those old salaries? My first job, at Sir George's Smorgasbord, I got $1.15 an hour.....I know you seasoned Cougs worked for less, but let's see. More importantly, how did we survive??????

Message: Bruce Hanson said he kept the $100.00 on the game show. The younger set probably thinks that wasn't much money but that was 1/2 a months salary for me in 1959. A nice chunk of change back then. Smart move.

Message: THE WIFE AND I WERE ON LETS MAKE A DEAL IN EARLY 1964. MONTY ASKED IF I HAD A $1 BILL? I DID AND GAVE IT TO HIM. HE THEN PUT IT INTO A MONEY MAKING MACHINE (A TRICK YOU COULD BUY AT MAGIC & JOKE STORES (REMEMBER THE ONE IN INGLEWOOD BY SEARS?)YOU WOULD PRE-FEED IN $1 AND THEN CRANK IN BLANK PAPER AND OUT WOULD COME THE $1) ANYWAY IN WENT MY $1 AND OUT CAME A $100 BILL NOW DO YOU WANT TO KEEP THE $100 OR PUT IT BACK INTO THE MACHINE? WE TOOK THE $100. MONTY CRANKED THE MACHINE TO SEE HOW WE DID AND OUT CAME A $1,000 BILL (FOREIGN MONEY) ABOUT 25 CENTS . AT THE END OF THE SHOW WE WERE ASKED TO EXCHANGE OUR $100 FOR A DOOR. WE KEPT THE MONEY. I THINK THE LARGE PRIZE WAS A TON OF BRUCE WAX AND A FLOOR BUFFER. WE BOUGHT A SOFA WITH THE $100 BEING NEWLYWEDS.

Message: John, I won't comment on Mrs. Averette's 3rd grade class of 1961 for obvious reasons but I was wondering how many people in that photo will be attending the 36 year reunion in August? Here is a fun fact: One of the people in this photo became an actress and has been on television several times using her maiden name but changed the spelling.
