Message: Okay John, I'll take a shot at this Restaurant question. Would it be; Gulliver's, The Trails, or maybe The Cavillier? Dinah's Family Restaurant was also over in that neck of the woods. Dinah's was in competition with Roscoe's for having pancakes and chicken!
I remember Dinah's too. Wasn't the Cavalier close to the Buggy Whip on La Tijera? Sorry Leslie, and thanks for trying...

Message: The only place I can think of is Joe Petrelli's...but I'm pretty sure that is wrong..I'll ask my folks when they visit this weekend if we still haven't figured it out.
Joe Petrellis was a great steakhouse in Culver City. George Petrelli has a steakhouse almost across the street from his brother's place and it too is a top notch place for steaks, but not the answer. Thanks for trying, Laura.

Message: John, you can not be thinking of PANN'S. It was a coffee shop with great building on La Cienega and Centinela.
No, that's not it either. This was a classy restaurant, not that Panns wasn't, but a little more upscale. I've got a call into the Inglewood Chamber of Commerce. Hopefully they will have historical records of their members. Thanks Gary.

Message: John, the place you are looking for was Haji Baba's. It was an Armenian place with the best food on the west side. My wife of 33 years worked there as a hostess and her mom worked there for over 25 years. Lamb rules.
Hey Gar', No, I remember Haji Babas too..... that's not it. I'm still looking, but haven't cracked it yet. Thanks for trying.

Don't know anything new to report there either. Sorry Jessie....

Message: So does anyone know what's going up in the place of the Cockatoo Inn since it got torn down? I was very sorry to see it go...When I was growing up it just always looked so elegant to me. I couldn't wait to grown up and go there. When I finally did get to go...it didn't disappoint me at all! The glamour and charm were still there, just as I had imagined as a little girl.
Hi Jessie, No idea what the plans are for the Cockatoo corner. Maybe someone else knows something?

Message: I'm looking for stories about my father or uncles. My dad was Earl Jones and would've been at HHS in the early to mid fifties. My uncle Richard Jones is doing well and now lives in AZ. My other uncle Gene Jones passed in 2003. My father sadly passed in 2001. I would love to talk to anyone who remembers anything about them. Thanks so much!
I remember Gene Jones, although I didn't know him. Had a Jaguar tattooed on his arm and he was an 8th grader. I always wondered how he got away with that.

It was cool seeing all the older people there having fun. Most of them saw him before and wanted to come back.

I know the resturaunt you're talking about but drawing a blank at the moment. Do you remember The Kings X at Centinela and La Cienega? It was across the street from the Ladera Center.
Hey Cliff, Yes I was in the Kings X a few times with my dad; nice place.

Message: Read a few things about prank calls in CT and it brought some memory of a time I like this girl in my class whom I called one day. We were both in the 7th Grade with Mrs. Stafford class and I somehow manage the nerves to find her phone number in the phone book and give her a call. I liked her alot and wanted to talk to her. But I went to alil extreme and I tape recorded our converstation. (stalker? NOT!). I had found a phone/wire thing that you suck onto the phone piece to have it hook up to a tape recorder. I can't remember what our converstation was about but I'm sure it has to do with sports and home life since we both like baseball. Later, I used that same tape to tape record the show "Starky and Hutch" for our classroom theme show that I and 2 other classmates performed in class. I had someone start the tape and as we 3 were waiting to perform our show, on the begining on that tape was the phone conversation with that girl I liked! To my horror (and timing) only 2 works was audio out before I lept half a class to stop the tape and had it forwarded. To this day I don't know if this girl even knows it was her voice that was on that tape. I think I got it just in time. I came closed to being not only the classroom "JOKE" but probably the entire Jr High School! This girl, her name is Rachel Pinston......I often wonder what she is doing these days?

Message: John, can't help you on the name of that fancy place. Only one I can remember in that area was the Buggy Whip. That was a class joint. My favorite was the Blarney Castle and the Pantry. But I do remember the name of the man that built that fibre glass horse. He had his shop just south of Hawthorne city limits. off Inglewood ave. He was a calf roper, Bob Pruitt and he had a fine roping horse named Porkchop. His shop also built horse trailers. See John there is something on Cougartown all the time that flogs a memory about something in the area.
It's amazing isn't it? Thanks Carl....

Nope, Dotties is not the place. It had a used brick front with all used brick interior and a fireplace. Very 3/4star place. The waiters wouldn't write down your order, but simply remember it. VERY upscale place. Thanks Michael for trying....

Message: We were at Huntington Beach Pier today. We heard music in the air at Olive and Main. 2 doors down from Starbucks there was an outdoor concert. 4 members of various bands get together for a session every other week, next to the Surfer's Museum. They played all Dick Dale music. I was taken back to Hawthorne days. Other times there are Beach Boy songs, too. In the museum there was BB memorabilia, all their albums, a pendleton, gold and platinum records, pictures, CD's. There was a blown up copy of a business invoice where Brian Wilson hand wrote "Surf City". Dean Torrence edited it by crossing out "'53 panel truck", and writing "wagon and", then "heater or a radio", and writing "back seat or a rear window", in red. There were also binders of all their songs in year order. Fascinating. Also a lot of Dick Dale things, and other surfer memorabilia. It's worth visiting.
Sounds like our kind of place to visit. Thanks Adrianne....

Message: I live in the Sunrise Manor(one of the best kept secrets) area of Las Vegas with The Sunrise Moutain Natural Area 2 mile's east of me and NELLIS AFB, 2 mile's North of me. I am too comforted by the noise of the NELLIS THUNDERBIRDS when they pratice. And sometimes the landing pattern is change and I get to hear how quite the Air Force Jets actually are as they fly over my home to land. I am also proud and comforted by having NELLIS AFB in my back yard too "Defend our Land and Quality of Life".

Message: Before moving to Hawthorne in 1954, I lived on 109th St. between Doty and Prairie. The landing approach was between Century and 104th, so it awarded us a good close look at the planes coming in. My dad worked at Northrop until 1949 and I can't remember a time when I wasn't quizzed on the identification of each plane as it came in. When we moved to Hawthorne when I was 12, passenger jets were just starting to be seen in the skies. We lived on a hill with a big front porch that faced north. Dad and I would sit on the porch and I'd have to identify each plane and jet as they landed. A lot of fathers and daughters played cards or board games, but my dad and I played "Name that Plane"!! Good memories. When I'm visiting near an airport, I feel comforted by the noise too.
