Message: For those who remember the the first Boeing 747 landing at LAX in the 60s, and the first (only?) landing of the Concorde SST at LAX in the 70s, here is a date/time for you: The first Airbus A-380 is to land at LAX on Monday, March 19th, at 0930 hrs (9:30 am). Be warned: Public Safety officials are expecting traffic gridlock of biblical proportion.
Thanks Richard....

Message: Hey Cougars everywhere, its time to dust off those drivers and work on your short game because before you know it we will be teeing off for the 4th Annual Cougartown Classic. I know there were a few hick-ups last year with the shotgun start but we have worked very hard and have taken on the roles of tournament directors ourselves. This year is shaping up to be the best yet and its a great course, just ask the Griz bear.T hanks to Mr.Baker as always for allowing us to promote this event here on C-Town. See you all soon.
Thanks Bud, Let's go Cougar golfers, get signed up soon, as May is not that far away.

Message: You mean "light fingered Lucius?" I think I remember a credit card fraud that got Lucius in some trouble? Best Bruin guards were Hazzard & Goodrich running the half-court trap. Great fun to watch. Goodrich played for the Lakers, where did Hazzard play? Atlanta? Johnny Wooden, and Vince Lombardi -- best coaches ever in any sport? Coach Chauncey too. Denny Crum from Inglewood? Good to see Henry Cooper's mug on C-town. Only athletic scholarship in the class of '66 (I think--couldn't find it in Wikipedia). Pigeon goes well with a nice Chianti Jimmy Boy. R.I.P Blackjack.

Hi Keith, Chris lived on about Grevillea and Broadway, close to the Masonic lodge.

Message: When I was 10 playing in the minors on the Orioles (my team is mentioned in the newsletter but apparently our manager submitted no text), John Welch seemed like a god on the mound. He was freaking HUGE compared to everyone else. BTW, Carl Winegerst (sp?) is mentioned there. I didn't remember him playing Aviation but when I played Middle League, he hit a homerun off me to right center at Wiseburn park that would have been out in a major league park. Funny thing, and Keith won't remember this, that was the same game that I struck out Keith Morlock three times!

Message: Thanx Dennis Kilroy for posting that Aviation newsletter, good to see, I was batting a woping .195 with my 3 home runs just behind Big John Welch. We had success against Welch by bunting on him, forcing him to take his 6'6 frame off the mound and field that tiny ball ah memories....and my 3 taters were in one game against the Giants against Chris Perry I believe, just another Hahlbeck story to relate and I ended up with 4 total one off Donny Shoop good times good times. Aviation Little League long live sno cone tokens and those Fields of Big Dreams thanx again Dennis H1 OUT!
Thanks Dale.....OK Keith, I know you can you better that.

Message: Jim Sloey I thought about that question all day. First of all, I don't speak about BB in redundant terms. If they started the season in 63 therefore 63. Why do the obvious of 3,4,4,5,5,6. We know when the season ends. As far as the undefeated Bruins freshman, they spoke of them on the radio the other day. Concensus was, they would and could have beaten any team at that time including the national champs and not as an after thought Jim, it did cross my mind. And Bakers right. It was Lucius Allen and if not for attitude problems, could have been the best of all the UCLA guards. That's saying alot. Thanks for letting us jabber JB. I, at least, used to get a reprieve from the Fall Season against sc when BB rolled around. It's fun you guys. MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU! Jake N Jude. One other thing Jim, and all you other Cougs, I don't look at books for this, or the Internet.....You mean it shows? :-))
At least you know how to spell his name Speaking of guards, no one has mentioned Walt Hazzard.

Message: Chris Montez has also been appearing in Branson, Mo. I took my 1960 El Molino for Chris to sign, he was very surprised to see the year book from Hawthorne High. The sixties show will start again in Branson, Mo., March 30, Fabian, Bobby Vee, Bryan Hyland, Chris Montez, and it looks like they are planning a New Years Eve party this yaer. I had my picture taken with Chris and Fabian, they still look great. The Dick Clark theatre is online for more information. This is a great show lots of memories. Bill Medley and Paul Revere and the Raiders also have a show.
Thanks Jan...

Dawn, I looked in the Freshman class in the 61 El Molino and sorry, but didn't find Bob in there either.

Message: Talk about coincidences! I was going to write and ask about Zeke Montenez, aka Chris Montez, because I heard his song "Call Me" on the radio here in Athens yesterday. Reading through the feedback this morning, I saw two references to him. Zeke was always such a nice person and as far as I know he never let fame go to his head. I spoke to him many years ago and he was as genuine as ever. Does Zeke ever chime in here on the feedback? Anyway, have a good one Cougars! Jim Peppers
Haven't heard from him yet, Thanks Jimmy

Message: Mystery man Robert Stevenson? Could this be the Robert L Stevenson that lived on Oxford. Moved there in the late 50's from Missouri. Brother, Gary, class of 66. Tall and (at the time) thin? Went to the Christian School for a while? Is that you (him)? Well, if it is, you sold me a pigeon for 25 cents. His (the pigeon) name was Blackjack. He died some time ago. I want my money back. If that's the same Robert Lewis Stevenson, brother of Gary Lee Stevenson. Is it?
It has GOT to be !!!

Message: I grew up watching the 64 Bruins [the little Bruins-Fred Slaughter was the big guy at 6'5"] and every team thereafter. Danny Litton and I would bee line it for the Griffins house every Friday and Saturday night at 10:45 regardless of what was going on, to watch the scores on KTLA Channel 5 and the highlights then at 11 watch the entire re-broadcast. John Wooden is a better person than he was a basketball coach and he was the best basketball coach of all time. I met Coach Wooden one night at a Hughes Executive dinner and I asked him which team was his favorite. It was the first team after Lewis [Alcindor] because nobody expected them to win. They won in '70 and '71 with Sidney Wicks, Curtis Rowe and Steve Patterson, Henry Bibby et al. As far as Walton is concerned, Jake is right if he had not gotten hurt he would have been the best all around center of all time. He could do it all. Walton always listed himself at 6'11" but always seemed taller than Lewis when they played. He later said he did so because he didn't want to be thought a 7' goon. He was about 7'2". Finally Jake, I am disappointed that you didn't know the answer to the question I posed being the Bruin guy you are. Danny Litton, class of '68 and who John Wooden compared favorably to Gail Goodrich at similar ages wrote me today saying it was too easy a question. The answer is UCLA-freshman with Alcindor, Lucas Allen, Kenny Heitz, Lynn Shackelford and others. They were inelibible to play as freshman. GO BRUINS!
Who's Lucas Allen?

I remember one Dance Night at the Gunga Din he Played and the next day on Campus a rendition of his big hit was being sung. Hey Baby we can't take the chance. I left My "U.S.C. Mascot in my other pants." So lets Dance. It was believed to be the Schroeder & Sloey version, but no one really knows? Happy Spring, Henry

Message: Kyle, thats fun to hear that there's at least one Bruin fan out there. I agree that Bill Walton could have been the best ever at the center position. But Lewy coulda've too. As I said they stopped them from dunking when Alcindor showed up. But Sloey, you take me wrong when I say 63-64. The BB year starts the year before it finishes. The 63 year to 64 the 64 year etc. I know when Texas Western won that and it broke a string of ten of eleven. I do not know who went undefeated that year and didn't get invited. I really don't care. Maybe it was Nebraska! Is their dynasty dead? They, the prognosticators etc. are still kicking it around. There were only 16 positions open to all of College ball at that time. So I'm sure there were many that didn't make the tourney. But they then raised the bar to 32. UCLA still won. Then 64 and they won. But you would be hard pressed to find fault with the Wizard and the teams he put together. You can find fault with the Mona Lisa, but the fact is that it's perfect to alot of people. Jeez Sloey, they even got close last year, # 2 and have another shot coming up. Go BRUINS! MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU. Jake N Jude.
I gotta agree with Russ, Jim, UCLA was the epitome of College basketball in the 60s AND early 70s. You know that too....

Message: Kyle and Rojo, more Bruin stuff. I was in spring football with Al Geverink and we would lift weights and then go to the old men's gym to shoot some hoops and loosen up. In walks Edger Lacey, all city player of the year with a recruit, Lew Alcindor. They got him some shoes and Edger and Willie Naules, an all pro in the NBA tried to stop him. Forget it and the following year he went for 50 as a freshman against the UCLA team and the next year the NCAA changed the rules for centers. I think he lost 3 games in 4 years.

Message: John, I have to give it up for you, man! I got an email link to the big HHS lockdown and I have to say that compared to what I've seen here in the inner city, the HHS kerfluffle just looked like your basic recess! I think the media just get a little jumpier in the suburbs. Combine your spot-on social commentary with the fact that you had a great Cruise Night of Healing and all I can say is I LOVE YOU MAAAANNNN!
HEY joseph, and can you imagine, not one solitary gang banger at Cruise Night. Of course, we had sharpshooters on the roof of the used car lot across the street, but thank God they weren't needed.
Hey buddy, we missed you AGAIN on Saturday night. Please journey out of the inner city sometime. I know it's chancey, but you may surprise yourself and make it back home with nary a scratch.
I LOVE YOU TOO MAAAAANN!!!
