Message: Any RFK candystripers remember the (cute) kid from El Segundo who shattered his leg in the late 70's? He had his room crammed with many friends and candystripers well beyond the firecode of the day. They soon made a rule that only volunteers over age 21 could go to his room.

Message: Speaking of the Biltmore Hotel in Hermosa; does anyone remember Derek "You Should Have Been Here Yesterday" Harrison. Derek started at HHS then moved to the beach with his family and lived behind the Biltmore. Derek and his brother went to MCH for the next 3 years. Bill Daquila and I would go to Hermosa to surf with those guys. The other guy that was always down there has Robbie Stitum; played Basketball for MCH. Robbie's claim to fame was his painting hung over the salad bar at the Chart House in Redondo. Anyone remember that great surf painting? Anyone remember the other painting in the bar of the big day at the Breakwater in '62?

Message: To Keith Jones, If B...S... was Brass, you would be a Symphony Orchestra. I've got a couple of questions for you.
1. What form of mind altering drug were you on when you tried to set your own leg? Setting ones own leg falls between being really stupid and really really stupid. Are you watching too many old westerns where the guy falls off his horse, breaks a leg, sets it himself, gets back on the horse and continues on about his business?
2. Do you really expect anyone to believe that a nurse in a hospital would allow 30 people in a room at one time? What did she do, just move the old guy who was mad, to another room so as not to disturb your party?
Didn't even think about 30 people in a 2 bed hospital room. Kinda like having a New Years Party in a walk-in closet.

Message: Aloha Mr. Key. I couldn't go that year cause I got in a motorcycle accident and had a broken leg. When it was time to get my cast I told the doctor I didn't need to get one cause I set my own leg and tried to walk and it hurt really bad. He ended up taking another set of x-rays and showed them to me and it was set all wrong. So he said he had to re-break my leg and re-set it. I still remember how much that hurt when he did that. I also set some record for having the most people in a room at Hawthorne Community. I had over 30 people in their at one time. There was one other older man in the room and he got so mad he requested to get a new room so I had a big room. So I missed the trip to Hawaii. But a funny thing is when I moved here I was involved with a group called No Hope in Dope. We went around to the schools to talk to the kids. And we went to Castle High which is the school we played when we came to Hawaii the year I didn't go. The VP knew all about the game. And Mr. Key you were easily the best Principal I have ever had and seen. You were very supportive of everything that went on. Plus you were so much nicer than Mr. Nelson. (that was our VP right?)
And by the way Mr. Key I am surprised you remembered that or even knew about it.

Some of us don't show up otherwise. #1 still my favorite and #40 brought back memories of an all nighter at Dodger stadium with Tambo and Timmy Thomas waiting for World Series tickets, on my 18th birthday 1966. Yes we got them for the only two games at Dodger stadium, Orioles sweep the Bums 4-0. Another time, another well lots of stories.

Message: Back when we were around eleven or twelve Danny Kieffer and I decided to go over to Aviation Blvd. and watch the jet airliners come in to land. If you remember, they flew really low over the highway just before touching down. It was too tempting for us so we decided to see if we could hit these new jet airliners with rocks. Sure enough, to our delight we could actually hit them. Soon a squad of Airport officials came screeching up in several vehicles, jumped out and started giving us the riot act. We stood there, standing on the railroad tracks that ran along the chain-link fence separated us from them, while all the time one of them was trying frantically to open an old padlock holding a gate closed. We dutifully waited and listened and then waited and listened some more until finally they just gave up and got back into the vehicles and drove off. We laughed all the way home. Of course, now looking back at it I realize that it was a miracle that a rock didn't fly into one of the jet engines.

Message: Hey Bevan, I had now had put on DVD the Super 8 movie clips my Dad took of our last basketball game (at El Segundo). Unfortunately, it has several clips of me missing layups in pre-game warmups and committing turnovers during the game. But other than that, it is a priceless item that I will be bringing along to the 30 year reunion (and/or perhaps getting Dennis Kilroy to post on the 30 year website www.hhs77.com ).

Message: It's nice to see Coach Minami here. Of all my teachers I have ever had Coach was the best and meant more to me than any of them. He really tried to help me in baseball and life. He was a strong guy too and inspired me to start lifting. He got mad at me allot but i realize it was because he cared about me. I'm really sorry I let him down for not trying harder in baseball and making it to the pros. Allot fo people thought I should have made it but I was lazy and stupid. I wish I had listened to them. Thanks Coach and hope everything is good with you.

Message: I also grew up on 120th between Felton and Inglewood , my house was on the south side of 120th next to the corner house from Felton. Is Felton market still there I use to go in there between 1984 to 88 and look at the expiration dates on the cans and they had all expired in the 70s. I also remember the turtle (I have a memory of it smelling like pee under the turtle) at the park and the wading pool. The park people would make us walk around in the pool as our eyes burned to mix the bottle of chlorine they dumped into it as it was filling up. Since toys have been mentioned I had a creepy little thing called a drowzy doll it looked like it was drunk or stoned drowzydoll.com if you want to see I guess this thing has some kind of cult following.
Hi Jennifer, Yep, Felton Market is no longer there. Does anyone know when it was torn down?

Message: I have a question for all you knowledgeable Car guys out there. I'm a little ol'lady wanting to drive my little classic '65 VW Bug. The car has been garaged and it's clean but I somehow broke the little pin that holds the emergency brake in place. I couldn't drive it so Jim disconnected the battery. Because of the alarm system on it, I can't reconnect the battery because I don't know enough about it. My question is do you guys think that AAA will help us out. We're both fairly gimped up and it's too hard to sit inside a VW and try to work. If I can get it down the hill, Brake Max has offered to do the work. Bottom line is that I need to get it licenced. I love driving my bug. It's a blast from the past.
Hi Ricki, Call AAA and ask. Tell them your problem with the alarm, or have them tow it to your automotive shop.

Please sign the guest book at www.dailybreeze.com/obits. To send the family a message, share a memory, for directions to services or to view the online video tribute, please go to the mortuary's website, www.LAfuneral.com I would appreciate it if this could be posted on Cougartown.com asap. Thanks, Neil Minami(former teacher and coach at HHS)
Hey Coach Minami, Thanks very much for the information on Jim Shaw. I'm sure lots of Ctowners will be there as Jim was a fixture in Hawthorne for many, many years. Please check in anytime as our Cougs love to hear from teacher/mentors, and what's going on in their lives today.

Message: Joseph, Back in the day there was a saltwater plunge in Redondo. Next to the plunge was the world's smallest aquarium. I remember there were always water leaks, poor lighting and a fishy smell in the aquarium. I remember there was a two to three foot drop in the floor level in the first three steps beyond the entrance. It was almost as sad as the gold mine at Knott's Berry Farm. I remember it was really fun.

Message: I remember King Harbor Sea Side Lagoon was around in 1965. Having a baby sister, our mother would no longer take us to 18th place and play in the waves. She thought that King Harbor was a safer place for sister Kate. Bruce and Karen Ailey (HHS 72-74) and their mother would join us. I longed for the rough waters but was a prisoner of the back seat of the car. I always thought it foolish to have to pay to swim in the ocean when you could get it for free. Yes, it did look like a gloomy movie set with a thatched roof.
