Message: Hi John, I was just looking at Paco's Pics and have a question. Joyce, (sorry, I don't know her last name.) a very attractive gal is seen in her '62 HHS sweater which is light blue. Weren't Hawthorne's colors always Scarlet and Gold or is this a club sweater? Just curious. ss
Hi Sharon, Yes, that's the mother of my daughter in that classic, and it still fits her too. Yes, Scarlet and Gold have always been HHS colors, but the colors for the senior jackets and sweaters were kind of a robin's egg blue. (probably why I didn't get one) Thanks for asking....

Message: Cougar sightings: Carol Drozdowski class of (around) 67- ran into her at Big Lots - didn't recognize the face at first but the voice caught my ear. And, Gloria V and John Achrem on T-day. Tickled to read that the Robotics class is so highly regarded- hey, school's supposed to be about academics anyway; sports is just a sidebar (she said as the crowd booed and hissed from the sidelines.)Discipline, behavior, moral and ethical standards and study habits, responsibility of the parents. Creative and stimulating teaching, responsibility of the teachers. (Thank you Konnie!) Safety, responsibility of administration. As for unions, as a former Teamster of 20 years, I can personally attest to the fact that unions are absolutely worthless to good, hard working employees; and priceless if you are shiftless and useless. You can decide for yourself where I landed in that description. HA!!! Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving, we did! - thank you John Achrem for a FABU meal! Stuffed to the gills!
Sports are to school like veggies are to meat and potatoes. You may not always like them but they help make you strong.
John cooks too?? Man, no wonder Gloria loves that guy. Thanks Sharon for the Coug sighting....

Message: Hey John, thanks for the shout out. Thinking I'm a one dimensional Pink Floyd fan, you may not that I've seen Springsteen live 45 times. I was aware of the new Jerry Lee CD because someone in Led Zepagain brought a copy for everyone to hear his version of the Zeppelin song "Rock n Roll" (ya know, "been a long time since I rock n rolled . . . ") It was amazing -- such a perfect set of lyrics for this particular CD. I don't own it yet, but it's just a matter of time.

Message: Dan Johnson (I immediately thought of you), Have you been introduced to the NEW Jerry Lee Lewis CD (The Last Man Standing)?
It's Jerry Lee with; Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), Bee Bee King, Bruce Springsteen, Mick Jagger and Ron Wood, Neil Young, Keith Richards, Merle Haggard, Don Henley, George Jones, Rod Stewart, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristoferson, Kid Rock, and a few more. This thing has got to be the BEST CD I've heard in years. I hope you all have a chance to hear this one. I LOVE Jerry Lee and he's kinda been gone for a few years, but this one will be his legacy. Go to Amazon and listen to some of the clips.
Thanks to Rich Sloan(HHS60) for the heads up....

Message: The news feature reports on the new movie, "Bobby" has conjured up some old memories of June 1968. It reminded me of when the graduating class of 1968 at Dana Intermediate was in the parking lot at school going though graduation practice. This was on the day Robert Kennedy was being flown back to New York from Los Angeles following his assassination. While we were out in the parking lot, there was a flurry of activity at LAX with many news and police helicopters flying overhead. This caused many of us to turn and look in the airport's direction to see the presidential Boeing 707 (that LBJ sent) take off carrying RFK's body. While our own personal history was being made, we were also witness so some national history at the same time.

Message: Happy Thanksgiving everyone! A short break between the Cowboys winning and the turkey needing slicing... John, a short comment on school fences. The difference between the 60's and today is that we were able to use the ballfields to play year round. Now when you drive by a school on a summer afternoon there are no kids out there, and a large sign says that only organized sports can use the facilities. No wonder their is a weight problem today, the kids aren't allowed to have fun outside.
Too many kids on Playstation too. Thanks Carl....

Message: I hope everyone has a safe Thanksgiving day weekend. I read the Daily Breeze article about HHS also. The discussion seems to have offered a lot of food for thought. When I was teaching, I also noticed a widespread change in classroom behavior and student responses compared to when I was in high school. I was saddened by the lack of student discipline but always found students, who in spite of the hardships, were wanting to excel. I also always found teachers who had great instructional programs. There is hope for HHS and alumni sites such as Cougartown provide opportunities and encouragement that support for our schools and community is possible.

Message: Wow, what an interesting array of postings this past week. Just like a cold or flu, attitudes can be contagious.....and whatever strain it is that Coach Chauncey has is definitely worth catching! Loved your comments JB to Gary bickers last post. I can only imagine the character and courage it must take for a football team to go out onto the field week after week, only to bring home one loss after another. Heck, I'm willing to bet that the Oakland Raiders, Detroit Lions, or Arizona Cardinals aren't feeling very good about their performance right now either, but ya know what? They will be back. Not everyone can have a successful season year after year. John, I agreed with you when you said that the 2007 Cougar Football Team is VERY special. Of course they are --- they're COUGARS!!!!! They have simply come to a bend in the road right now. It's not the end of the road...unless they fail to make the turn.....I'm not saying it will be easy, but perhaps one of the simplest ways to change our mood or mental outlook is to remind ourselves of the good things in our life. Reflecting on how far we have come, what we have already accomplished, and what we have learned, can be very encouraging. Appreciating our dearest friends, our closest family members, our favorite possessions, and simply appreciating ourselves. From time to time we all need a lift or an attitude adjustment. Try to appreciate and reflect on the good things. Count your blessings. It can be done anytime and any place. Today is Thanksgiving. It should be a time to reflect on changes, remembering that we have all grown and changed from one season of life to another. Let's acknowledge those blessings which are ours...think of our families and friends...share a meal with someone who is hungry...call someone who is alone...call someone who is ill. And pray for our troops and their families and give thanks to God from our hearts.
Thanks Anita, You and your family have a great day.

Message: I want to wish a very Happy Thanksgiving to a very special group of people, my Cougartown family. There have been times, when things look bleak, that coming to Cougartown has brightened my day. It reminds me that there are others out there with shared experiences and memories of times gone. I can take solace in the knowledge that, with those shared experiences, I will never be alone and I will have a family where ever I may be. For that I am very thankful. Thanks John and to all my "extended" family.
Thanks James, you all are welcome here anytime.

Message: Well another Thanksgiving is upon us. Time to reflect on what we are thankful for. First and foremost I'm thankful for my family. Mom and I are going to my Daughter and Son in Law's house in La Quinta in the morning for our traditional Thanksgiving feast. I am so thankful for my daughter who has given me 43 years of nothing but happiness. I'm thankful for my Son in law, James, who has been a God send for our family. I love you both very much. I'm thankful for my Grandchildren; Cory, Evan, and Katie, who will someday grow up, have family of their own, and carry on our families history.
Next is my mother. I love you so much, Mom. You've supported me through Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Little League, Pony League, and for 62 years of my life in any and all of the foolish and non-foolish ventures with your normal balk, then, most of the time, said OK.
I'm so thankful for my Father who always backed me in ANYTHING I wanted to do; took me fishing, got me into quarter midgets, built Hot Rods with me and was just a best friend to me and all of my friends. I Love You Dad.
I'm thankful for my joined-at-the-hip friends who've been with me from childhood; Bob Reagan, Mike Shay, Gordon Bell, George Gates, Bob Gross, and Loren Heath, who just passed away. I love you all for your friendship over the years from childhood to old age. We have LOTS of skeletons in the closet, let's keep it that way.
I am so thankful for my Teachers/Mentors from HHS. Coach Chauncey, Coach Plum, Mrs. Mark, Mrs. Clark, Mr. Caldwell, Mr. Walden, Coach Halladay, Mr. Nyman, and many more who taught not only their subjects but life in general.
I am so thankful for ME coming up with this crazy idea of Cougartown. I have met so many people that I truly cherish and love, that I'd never have met. I will not name you all here because I'd leave someone out but looking on the Ctown Database tonight, their are well over 6000 people, and 458 that I counted have become VERY good friends. OK, so I'm ranting here. Nevertheless, I have so much to be thankful for. I hope you all have the same feelings, friends, teachers/mentors, and newly found OLD friends to be thankful for too.
Please leave any Thankful thoughts as I will be gone tomorrow, but will post them when I get back.
It has been a PURE PLEASURE to serve you all for the last 9 years. I truly hope this thing continues forever. Thanks to all for making Ctown what it is, the best damned Alumni Site on the Internet.
I LOVE ALL YOU GUYS MAAAANN!! I really do. God Bless You ALL, and have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
