Message: Hello John.....I was doing some catching up with CT reading and in regards to Sharon Moore's post I must say that yes - when you stop to really think about it, we are all just about six degrees or acquaintances away from anyone. But just to set the record straight.....Bob Reagan's (HHS'62) daughter in-law Kristen is actually the cousin of my daughters best friend from college. But hey.....as you said we are ALL related in someway right?.....kissin cousins and all that jazz? ;)
OH!! well....seven degrees then. Sorry about that....

Yeah right!!!

But what the heck do I know with all you "car guys" out there.:-)) That was a "pun" on the old saying of being a "JOCK" folks . Cause there were CAR GUYS AND there were JOCKS. Each had an edge in some respect. We didn't quite respect each other then ...but we're in a learning process at present due to Ginger Mark, God Rest Her Soul, and Mr Baker who has brought us together. MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU. Jake N Jude. P.S. If you travel, keep the shiny side up.
Yes, but we car guys can go on with our cars until we're 6 feet under. Jocks are pretty much done when they're 35-40. OH, that little back window in the 56 4-doors didn't open.

Message: Happy July and happy fourth to all. Let us remember why we celebrate. John indicated that June was CT'S annual dues month. A little birdie told me that annual dues of $10 would be accepted anytime. They go for a good cause...and what a bargain. I LOVE READING FEEDBACK! Jack (Tim) Dicus - congratulations on your heroism and reward. Did you go to Dana?
Love to all, HCH
Thanks for the Dues Plug, Mr P, and Happy 4th weekend to you too.

Message: As I reflect on the great Freedom?s this country has allowed me to enjoy, I also consider the all wonderful Fourth?s spent in good old Hawthorne. How exciting it was to see the fireworks stands starting to be constructed and knowing that meant it was just a few more days until the celebration was here. Usually after a full day at the beach or a park, it could not get dark fast enough because that meant a trip to the curb to take pleasure in sparklers, fountains, snakes, Smokey Joe?s and Whistling Pete?s with your family. All the neighbors would come out to enjoy the show or add to it with their own spectacular pyrotechnics. Many times that would include a visit to Centinela Park in Inglewood which would always put on a magnificent pageant. During my teen years that also included the optimism for my friends and I of picking up an Inglewood girl. You knew you had a fairly good opportunity because these girls had no idea what jerks we all were that Hawthorne girls had discovered long ago?haha. On one of my last visits to Centinela, we found a place to sit that was fairly uncrowded just above the staging area. As the show commenced we discovered why this location was so barren of spectators. We spent the entire event being bombarded with burning embers and mortar casing remains. For a bunch of silly teenagers, it didn?t get better than that. Happy Birthday America and have a grand Fourth, Cougs.
Thanks Jer', well said, and Happy Independence Day to you all.

But thats an Olds that I can see in that picture. You can tell by the chrome line. Anyway I forget what we used to say when someone was wrong. Have a great 4th everyone. Be safe. God Bless our Troops. If you don't like that statement don't read it.MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU! Jake N Jude.
Hey Jake, Yes, there's an Olds in the picture, but look right over Wally's head. That's a 56 Chevy. Just so you know, I'm trying to tie you and Gordon Bell together. He's coming down for our reunion on the 16th of September.

Also, Eucalyptus ave school had a small stage in the lunch room but when a bigger stage was needed they used the Gunga Din. And Hi to Don Donaldson a neighbor of mine 50 some years ago (unbeliveable!!!) Carole I hope I got the names right, senior moments come now and then.
The Gunga Din, now there was a fun party place. You could go right around the side behind the Boy Scout building a have a beer; pretty secluded. Thanks Carole....

Message: Talk about six degrees of separation. I just found out that my transaction coordinator is related to Dave Kato and knows Mary and Rich Sloan. The reason I found out is that someone in our office is going to see the Beach Boys this weekend and I mentioned that I went to high school with them and she asked me if I knew Dave, Mary, and Rich. I told her I did not know them personally, but that I knew of them through Cougartown. I guess that's kind of a sighting. You just never know.
Hey Sharon, EVERYONE knows Rich and Mary Thanks for the pseudo-sighting. Last weekend my friend Bob Reagan's (HHS62) son, Cory and his wife Kristen were down from Redding. Somehow the conversation got around that Kristen and Anita Harmon's (HHS69) daughter were best friends too. Neither one were Cougs, but I'm tellin' ya', we are ALL related.

Message: John, you know I LOVVVEE YOU MAAAANNN but I don't know if anyone has gone down the memory lane route via....LEONARD'S. Remember that place, a prototype department store, somewhat warehousey, on Sepulveda? It later became a Hughes/Raytheon/Boeing/etc. building, I think known as S-34. Anyway, what brings it to mind is, I remember a fine trip there as a young lad right around this time of year. Leonard's had a liquor section, and the chalkboard outside of it in this particular circumstance said, "BUY A FIFTH/ON THE THIRD/FOR THE FOURTH." Now, nothing could be more patriotic, more inspiring, eh? It certainly has stuck with me all these years. Alas, here in the Inner City and all throughout America, they don't measure spirits in fifths much anymore---it's all 750ml and one liter, and below that you have pints and half-pints...careful with those, because a half-pint is generally 200 ml, but a so-called pint is only 375 ml...I liked the true half/pints/fifths/quarts system better...All the best and celebrate safely, man...
Hey joseph, YES!! Leonards on Sepulveda and Mariposa. One of the first "White Front, Zodys" type establishments. Bought my first set of left handed clubs there. Actually a set was a 7iron, a 9 iron, and a putter for the exorbitant price of $16.95 plus 4%. As far as the BOOZE goes.....well, "YOU oughta know". Boat drinks aplenty at Leonards. Thanks joseph and I LOVE YOU TOO MAAAANN!!!

Message: I have to agree with Jim Fox that it looks like they are breaking ground for the pool. The fence behind the group would separate the railroad tracks from the road that goes back to the shop classes. The street behind the ?56 Chevy would be Inglewood Ave.

Message: The ground breaking photo must have been for the pool. In my last year '55' there weren't any fences at all as the pic shows. It appears as though the photo was taken looking north and the Oldsmobile with the dent in the door is much to late of a model for the picture to have been taken when construction on the school was started.
The POOL it is!!! Thanks Denny....

Message: In the ground breaking ceremony, the second celeb from the left looks like Lester Wandell. In 1956, he was the principal of Washington School. It's too bad Daddy Del isn't still around. He would have been able to instantly fill in all the name blanks. Considering that the photo was taken around 1956, my guess is that they were breaking ground for the pool. Happy 4th to all!
Another possibility. Thanks Jim...

Message: A few words about YORK AVE SCHOOL. I started Kindergarten there in 1950. This was in the new bldg on the west side of York Ave. I believe I was in the second grade when coming to school one morning "we" found our classroom had caught fire the night before and was in ruins. So, our class was squeezed into another one until the staff could work out a plan to spread out the students more evenly. (The fire was in the south original bldg East of York. During my tenure at York I saw the classroom rebuilt and the new front bldg (along the east side of the Ave) be built from scratch that included the new offices and the cafeteria with stage. While in the 4th grade our class(room) decided to put on a play (Hansel & Grettle) and Diane Bleeker, Steve Mascagno & myself starred in the production. We performed for the adult (parent) audience one evening and for the school one afternoon. Andrew Archibeque was instrumental in my getting the part of the witch. Since no one would volunteer he yelled out my name and our Mrs. Dawn agreed. (Actually, it was fun to do--I was even boooed at the school production!) The cafeteria is still used as a polling/voting place for many Hawthorne residents. Ahh, the nickel 50/50 bars & the quarter lunches, ummmmm. Although I usually brought my lunch from home, you know, home made stuff. Ummmm
I remember when York had the fire in 1951 or 52. I had moved on to Hawthorne Christian, but my friend, George Gates was still at York, and got about 6 weeks off, as I recall. I was just a LITTLE jealous. Thanks Jim....

Message: Well John, I think the class of 62 might need to make it a weekender. I just finished making the CD's for you from 1959-1962 for your class reunion. All in all there are 34 Cd's with 842 songs on them so you might have a tad bit of listening to do. Funny thing I found a new top 40's web site and in just doing those 4 years I wound up adding about 300 new songs to my collection at the same time. Now all I gotta do is get them to you.
Surf report: 2-3 foot and back to wearing full suits. The water this morning was around 56 degrees....Burrr
Hey Walter, I thank you and the class of 62 thanks you too. It will be a weekender for our class starting Friday night at the Hotel and ending Sunday, so we'll need them all. Let me know what kind of CDs you like and I'll send them along and thanks again.

Message: 98 degrees here and no rain in sight. Allergies galore! Tourists are hunting diamonds at the Diamond Mine State Park. 96 days until the first high school football games. Ya' gotta love it here! Re: the groundbreaking photo ... LA County Supervisor Kenny Hahn is fourth from left with City Councilman Vic Zaccaglin to the right of him. I believe the sixth man was a City Councilman as well. Ramona School also had a cafetorium with a stage for plays, band concerts and the Christmas choir standing and singing on the steps, etc. Those steps also got a good workout on square dance nights , with the girls sitting on them with their skirts spread out as much as possible. I guess that was to intice the "shy" boys to come across the other end of the room and ask for a dance. I didn't know until years later that the teachers "forced" ALL of the boys and girls to dance ... no excuses! But, my favorite thing about Ramona were the Halloween carnivals and sixth grade outdoor education. Was a counselor for the latter for Wiseburn School District my junior and senior years at HHS. Did we have it good in those days or what?
Great guesses Mary Ann. Thanks....
