Message: Ladies, ladies, ladies! Ok, so you have endured the cars and baseball but just wait until we start the War Stories? Just kidding. Gee guys, I can?t remember seeing girls fight at Hawthorne Intermediate or at HHS?*Sigh.* I did see a girl smack a guy into the street after he insulted her at Intermediate. He said something about her rather large size that she objected to. She may also have ripped his shirt, and she did it all without dropping the ice cream bar she was eating. The guys gained a lot of respect for that girl that day. Anyway, it has been nice reading and commenting on cars, racing, stadiums, teams, players, memories, etc. no matter how far fetched the stories are becoming. --- Baxter

Message: Answers to Keith Quiz:
Best Little League field was Sportsmen Park in Ladera Heights, site of the 1965 Wiseburn LL triumph over Hawthorne American's Fast Eddie Carroll.
Best High School Field without a doubt was El Segundo High's home field at the awesome Recreation Park. This was the house that George Brett and brothers built financed by El Segundo Big Oil. Green grass, pro infields, terraces, lights and stadium seating made this place tops. HHS baseball field was unremarkable and had a treacherous outfield with gopher holes. College Baseball Stadium is a draw between USC's Dedeaux Field and Jackie Robinson Stadium at UCLA. There probably a dozen as good as these 30 years later.
So Keith, not sure what you are are drinking/smoking in Hawaii, but if you were blasting balls 450 out of Blair Field in high school, you would have been playing in the majors instead of pumping iron. :-) Decades of time and fading memories have a way of increasing our batting power, pitching speed (Staffon over 90mph on the gun?!?) and statistics.
Dean
PS to J. Sloey: Nobody can swing a bat with the front elbow tucked tightly on an inside-out swing. In fact, the rear elbow is tucked when your hands lead the bat head. Try it in your kitchen. Still waiting on my pretzels. Worse judgment I have seen since the Super Bowl refs shafted the Seahawks.
PS2 Keep the baseball coming. It beats the h*** out of the boring Winter Olympics!

Message: Anita, we could get off the baseball theme, but it would risk naming names of "bra snappers" and their victims. Knowing that snapping sometimes led to other things, there might be a few embarrassed "Cougarettes". That's almost like getting to first base, OOPS, baseball again.

Message: I need the help of some of you "older" '60's alumni. Sitting around the fire discussing Sosa's (aka: Sammy the Whammy) retirement and I brought up the fact that there used to be a game show where this thing called (I'm almost positive) "Sammy the Whammy" would pop up and take all the contestant's money or prizes away, but for the life of me I can't remember the name of the game show. Also, on that same subject, does anyone remember a game show where the contestants would try to outline an object hidden in a giant picture kinda like in the Highlights magazines that were always in the dentist's waiting rooms?

Message: Boys! Boys! Boys! Now I realize that baseball is not necessarily an obsessive-compulsive disorder, but it certainly was beginning to seem that way! JB, could you really hear us screaming? And now Crotty is trying to turn up the heat a little with "cat fights"? Well, I'm afraid my 'vanilla' up-bringing would never have let me go there. And JB.....give me a break! You probably knew very darn well what a bra looked like in (what are we talkin' here?) 6th grade? Darlin' you could hardly call those bras! But you boys sure had fun coming up behind us and grabbing hold of them only to let go hearing them 'snap' against our backs! But one thing I do remember with great fondness was the mini skirt(of course with go-go boots)! For the first time ever in any fashion era the young became the leaders of fashion. The mini-skirt taught us 'Cougarettes' how to properly sit, stand, walk and 'bend over' in a lady-like fashion. Ahh.....those were fun times!

The key that Wally Moon used that any hitter can do to hit to the opposite field is to keep your front elbow in against your ribs that will create the drag to hit even inside pitches to the opposite field. Ted Williams, Ty Cobb, Rod Carew and I use to have this discussion for hours at least once a year. It was indeed a lively discussion that usually ended with Ted leaving for an appointment. It wasn't until years later that I realized he was meeting Keith and Jimmy Olson.

Message: Wow JB, I had no idea a little personal observation (or opinion) would lead to such a wide ranged response, and it would probably bore or alienate the Cougarettes. But, if you really want a subject to discuss that may be (or maybe not, one-sided, (I recall a few "cat fights"). How about the best and worst fist fight you ever experienced in school? Now that topic has never been broached here on CT...or has it? Talk about a growing experience!!!!!

Message: Zitheree do dah zitheree day. No pretzels James Howard. Kirk what you said was what Dean said but there is a little trick to make all that happen. A catcher can balk if he steps out of the catcher's box before the pitch is released, yeah there is one for 5 seconds [a catcher's box] of every game but NOBODY calls it. Pretzels are still up for grabs.

Message: Wally Moon was also "Rookie of the Year" with the Cardinals, and his moon-shot was the result of a tragic child-hood accident. Playing in the Ozark woods with his brother Bumper and their faithful Basset Hound, LeRoy, Wally was struck in the right eye by an errant snowball that left him blind in the right eye and unable to pronounce the word "zither." Wally perservered -- and had great reflexes, but his blindness made for a delayed swing that caused a majority of his hits to go to left field. Ya, that's what happened. Pass the Uncle Bucks, Jimmy.

Message: Man oh man, all this baseball talk already. And, this talk about the replica Wrigley field? Don't go there, from a long-suffering EX-Cub fan, it shoulda been burned to the ground. I had been a ChiCubs fan since I was seven, and last year hung it up to venture across town, figuratively, to the White Sox, and look what happened! If ya ever want to have fun chiding someone, go to a Cubs website with a fan forum. Most fun I had last year. Even when they were a month or two from the end of the season, and the team settled to the bottom, they were still, "oh yeah, only 30 wins in a row and we're goin!" It was hilarious. About the moon shot, haven't a clue? See you guys on Sunday, looks like the mentioning of it here at Ctown is bringing more, great!. GO CHISOX.

Message: Okay, since I only call when I need something...here is what I need. My wife Jenny's dad had an uncle. So, he was Jenny's (the girl on my book's cover) grandfather's brother.
His name was Babe Herman; not to be confused with Babe Ruth Herman.
He did play with the Babe and roomed with him at times.
I remember Vince Skully talking about the "Headless Horseman" when I listened as a kid.
If anyone knows anything about Herman, (Floyd Caves?) please pass it on. It seems that info on him is somewhat sparse and I have not found a photo.
I bet Keith Jones used to dine and golf with him at the Grand Wialea on Maui! Thanks, Jim
