Message: My mom convinced my dad to buy her a '68 Chevy Caprice from Kenneth Chevrolet. There were so many problems with the new "family" car that she told the sales manger, Jerry Mirkin, that the next time he saw her bring the Chevy in, to bend over because she was going to drive it up right up his A**. Having attended Leuzinger (as well as Inglewood High, Class of 1948) she was just the one to say such a thing. My mom being so subtle in speech and manner, immediately the Caprice was repaired. Nevertheless, my dad was still constantly working on that thing, hence "Chevro-leave-it". I got to hold the tools while he cussed. My first car was a '66 Ford Mustang sedan and the next was a '65 Mustang 2+2 fastback. I wish I still had both the Mustangs. Whaa!! My old buddy, Don Martin, went to "Loosefinger" too. His dad, Dale Martin, was a Hawthorne firefighter and another Ford Man ('64 Fairlane). Well, they also had a second car, a red '63 Valiant with the slanted engine and a strange push button transmission. But, as a firefighter, he had us free admission to the Plaza theater for Saturday matinees so it didn't matter if that Valiant was about the ugliest thing on wheels to travel the streets of Hawthorne, except for my grandmother's hospital green '50 DeSoto (?). So it goes.

Message: Does anyone remember Dial Chevrolet in Downey? In the early 60's this establishemnt had both television and radio ads with a corny little jingle that went something like: Dial-Dial-Dial-Chevrolet, One-block-off-the-Santa-Ana-Freeway, One-one-nine-eight-oh-East Firestone, Dial-Chevrolet-boom-boom (or was it dum-dum). My dad didn't like Chevys, called them a "Chevro-leave-it". He was a Ford man: first a gray '51 Sedan, then a white '61 Falcon with front bumper so rusted it made a good wood rasp. One day he flipped a cigarette butt out the driver's window but it landed in the back seat instead, igniting a fire. Bet it was the only time anyone saw a '61 Falcon lay smoke down Hawthorne Blvd.
Yep. The was MOLLY BEE singing the jingle for Dial Chevrolet, and before that it was Stanley Chevrolet....same jingle and same MOLLY BEE.
Yes Larry, that would be the one and only time a 61 Falcon would lay smoke.

I don't know about your parents, but that was a lot of money for mine, but they managed. Everyone have a great day. Oh and John NO!
Thanks Sharon, for considering it....

Message: If anyone wants to have a Cougar sighting this weekend, come and visit me at 24512 Cadiz Dr. in Lomita. I'll be sitting on my 5 bedroom, 3 bath open house that's listed for $800,000. Yes, John, this is a shameless ad, but I'll be close enough for you to come over and visit and I expect to see you there, I hope and a few other Cougars. Come on over and make my day go fast from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Hi Sharon, how about 250 down and 150 a month? I'll bring the papers.

Message: Don't worry about stepping on anything John! I met Chick during his last days at the convalescent hospital across from RFK. He was very ill, but his eyes lit up when anyone would recognize him. He had a bulletin board above his bed with a picture of him and "Storm". Not really a Cougar siting, but part of our childhood! How about H. J. Caruso, Felix Chevrolet (still there), Les Bacon Ford, and Yeakel Cadillac.
YES, Those are true late 50s, early 60s Memory Floggers, Steve, thanks for bringing them up.

Message: Re: Lou's Garage! Lee Leonard, King Robin, Bill Schultz, the Effler boys will probably remember a Hawthorne garage almost as famous. It was on the Broadway Circle and was owned by the father of our very own Dick Dixon. His Dad built, tuned, and modified our 1/4 midgets in the 50's. Another good garage in those days belonged to John Balch who's son Ken raced with us all. Another LA car salesman legend sold the first Mustangs for Brand City Ford. His dog was named "Storm". He was ?
That Brand Motors Ford City salesman was Chick Lambert and his dog Storm. He later went to work for Ralph Williams Ford and Ralphs Chrysler Plymouth. Chick finally ended up in the Bay area somewhere. Cal Worthington has made a fortune selling cars playing off the Chick and Storm duo. I too remember the Dixon's Garage where dad also worked on our quarter midgets. I also remember Kenny and his Dad. There's a story on Feedback page 529 about Mr. Balch.
Thanks Steve, and didn't mean to step all over your Feedback, it just hit home.

We had a bye on our schedule-- one of my kids asked me--"Where is bye, Coach ?" (Obviously he got limited playing time)
This epitaph on one old coaches tombstone, "Never Sick A Day In My Life -- And Now This!!" Anyway John --I enjoy these "lil jokes!" Stay well, as ever, Ol' Coach & Cathy
Hey Coach, I know you do, and thanks for adding some levity to our page and please add your stories anytime you can.

Message: John Boy; I don't remember Lou's garage, I do remember Earl Scheib though. I think his advertisement jingle went something like this " I'll paint any car any color, I'll paint your tires, I'll paint your chrome, $29.95 "
Good ol' Earl Schieb is gone but Earl Scheib Auto Painting is still going strong...only I think that 29.95 paint job is gone too.

Hey Carl, great memory floggers there. Felix Chevrolet is still in business and Fletcher Jones Chevrolet evolved into Fletcher Jones Motor Cars in Orange Co, I think.

Message: Yes John I remember Lou's Garage on Western ave, very well. I had to tow a few friends car from there with parts in the trunk in boxes, and repaired many that were "fixed" there all because they didn't or wouldn't listen to me or anyone else.
I'm sending this to you via regular email because I just discovered that since the feedback page was changed I can't download the 'add feedback' page any more. Hope you and yours had an enjoyable holiday and the new year brings more and better things your way. Thanks again for this site and all you do to keep it going.

Hey Jerry, You are correct on the Lou's Garage thing. The EARL SCHIEB of engine rebuilders all right.
Sorry you can't add Feedback anymore through the website because of the webtv thing. I will change that for all of our webtv'er people but in the meantime, just do what you did and email the message and I'll add it myself. Thanks Jer' for being with us and I'll see you at the next Cruise Night.

Message: On a cold Alaska winter day, I sit with the radio playing in the background and I hear a song that takes me back to south bay and Hawthorne. As I sit and contemplate the great times I had growing up there, I wonder if there are still good friends living there. But no matter how cold it gets, I still have the warmth of great memories and good times of home because it will always be that. Thanks for all the folks who have contibuted to this web site.
Hi Frances, Stay warm and know you are remembered. If anyone has Frances' pic, and in fact that whole page, from the 79 El Molino, please send it to me and I'll add it here. Thanks Frances for adding yourself to our Feedback page.

Message: I saw your wonderful site and hope I could impose on somebody. I was from Lennox and not Hawthorne, but you know that still makes us family. I used to visit the Foster Freeze in the late 70's and 2 friends who worked there. One was Pat Manetti a woman who drove a piece of junk Chevy Ranchero. White and didn't have reverse. She had 2 daughters named Starlene(Star) and Cheryl. I'm not sure how Cheryl spelled her name. If anybody could help me locate any of them I would be so greatful. We were very close but just lost touch. If someone knows someone at Foster Freeze perhaps they could help there. If you went to Hawthorne between the years of 1979 to about 1981 you mitch know me. I worked security with the company that wore all blue uniforms. The company was called A.R.Broese and Assoc. My name is Raymond (Mitch) Hyrny. I'm white about 6'1 and I was pretty easy going. If anybody can help me with my problem finding my friend please help and if you think you remember me please email me and I would be glad to write back. God bless you all and I look forward to hearing from somebody soon.
Sincerely Raymond (Mitch) Hyrny
Hey Mitch, Welcome and I'm sure some of the later Cougars remember your friends. Good Luck....
