Years later I saw him walking around Hawthorne, as Alan said half the man he once was. Not sure what happened but I was sorry to see him in that way. I'm sorry to hear what happened and I hope Rod is okay.

Message: It's really sad about Randy Beck. We grew up together, played ball, skiied, drank, smoked, blew our ears out with loud rock'n'roll and did all the crazed things of the era. Unfortunately, somewhere along the way Randy sort of lost his hold on reality. The last time I saw him he was just a shadow of the guy I grew up with. Those of you who really knew him know what I'm saying. But I prefer to remember the younger Randy - the one who could scoop up anything in the dirt at first base, could ski flawlessly down double black diamond runs at Mammoth and Tahoe, who would blurt out any crazed thing that came into his head just to get a reaction, and then give you that wacky laugh of his that let you know he was dealing his own twisted sense of reality as best he could. I know he wasn't at his best over these last few years. His grip on the world was slipping away. I just hope he went over the edge laughing. I'll miss you buddy.

Message: OK, lets get back to cruising the Blvd. Does anyone remember the yellow '40 Ford coup I used to drive. I put an Olds in it and was the fastest thing on wheels, so I thought. Someone, I can't remember what his name was, offered me a ride in his ice blue 409. I had never been in anything so fast before! If I remember right, he simply took it down and had it super ballanced and then put back together. Who is that 409 guy? BTW, Robin Petty bought my '40. I then had a '55 Crown Victoria that was lowered 2" fore & aft with salt and pepper diamond dust roof. My first car was a '51 blue chevy that I promptly painted the name on the back fenders "Sex Banger" (before I met Alan Hauge). I know it was crude but at the time I thought it was cool. I was only fifteen. Alan painted it free just for the practice in silver with candy burgundy scallops. Does anyone remember any of this? Lanny
Sorry Lanny, not me. The 409's that I recall were owned by Vic Zaccaglin, Jimmy Joseph, Bob Fraser, Bob Reagan, Mike Hendricks, Larry Sturkio, and my Dad. One of those was Blue (Bob Reagan).

Message: As God was looking down upon the west coast of USA he knows the problems regarding power and water California, Oregon and Washington is having. Washington isn't too bad....they got there PUGET SOUND. But CA and OR will have to trade off somewhere and since there's less people in Oregon than California God decided to give the heat to Oregon while southern Califnoria remains cold. Not too many people have air conditioner in Oregon but every household has one in California. God smiles and said "There, my work is complete". Oregon can enjoy it's nice weather so long as no idiot starts lighting matches in our Forests. And we will have enough water for this area so long as we don't give it away. And, our power will not be given away because California doesn't need it in their mild temps weather. God is a good God.......

Message: Thanks Bob Brophy and JB for the headsup to fellow Cougs on our Indy 500 effort this season. We've got a real chance to pull off our third win of the season with Sam Hornish and the Pennzoil sponsored #4. Brightest yellow car in the field. Starting 5th row inside, with a qualified speed of over 223 mph, and leading the IRL points is way cool for our 21 year old star. My race day job with Pancho Carter, former pole sitter at Indy, is to call the line to the driver on where the competition is in relation to our car at any moment. We are called spotters. Fellow cougs we need your cheers for this Sunday. Watch on ABC at 11 AM Pacific. A million spectators, 33 cars, the second fastest field in history and $2 million to win on this 2-1/2 mile historic track. Coach Plum can you imagine going 2 football fields a second and being 27 inches off the ground. Thats Indy car racing...HHS style. I guarantee you if we win...there will be a mention on ABC of HHS when they ask the team "where you going now", when I say the HHS Summer Prom. Thanks to all who have wished us well in our Indy car effort and see ya on the next cruise night with HHS'er Gary Nelson. Miss ya all.
Hey Dick, Good luck and it's not HHS summer prom, it's "COUGARTOWNS PROM NIGHT 2001 !!"

Message: Boy I don't how much press the new movie Pearl Harbor is getting over there but here everything is Pearl Harbor the movie. My ex called me today to tell me she was walking behind Ben Affleck on Kalakaua. What's the big deal. The guys who are really getting the press and recognition they derserve are the veterans that were survivors of Dec. 7, 1941. It is really neat seeing them and listening to them. The premier here is the most costly premiere ever produced for a film. Kind of neat. Saw the aircraft carrier today as I was driving by. That thing is huge. Hope everybody sees it. My dad was in WWII but was stationed in the Aleutian Islands. Is it hot there? Aloha Nui Loa
Is it hot WHERE....in the Aleutians or here? Here, it's NOT hot.

Hey Bob, Just got an email from Dick today......he writes:
Howdy John from Indianapolis. Site continues to look good. I signed the Prom check and my crew should have it in the mail either today, Monday or Tuesday...Looking forward to the blast from the past...Keep an eye out for #4 Sam Hornish. I will be one of his spotters this year and we look to have, hopefully 3 wins in a row for the season. Currently leading the IRL points and we are excited to bring home a win and get the bottle of milk in victory lane.....
So to all Cougs, we're pulling for Sam this year. Good Luck Dick and may you be drinking milk at the end of the 500. Thanks Bob.....

Message: I think I can top Sloey with the TRUTH! In the early 70's my buddy Jeff Bottoms and I traveled from Oregon to Southern Cal to catch a Dylan concert when he was touring with the Band. After a week in the pit I was getting a little claustrophobic and decided it would be adventurous to hitch hike home rather that wait several days for our ride. Adventure being the keyword here. Before reaching Santa Barbara I was propositioned twice by guys offering beachfront accommodations for the night. Beings it was early morning and quite frankly not my style, I continued on and found myself outside San Francisco as the sun was setting. I was set on getting a ride through the city so it was taking a while, when this guy stopped, said he was going through and to get in quick. As he pulled away, he informed me that he had just robbed a liquor store and proceeded to give me a 90 mph thrill ride into the center of the Berkley District. Now Berkley is not through the city but I think he may have been under some stress. My next ride came from three longed haired white "brothers" that said they were on their way to Oregon which sounded great considering there were at least 20 other hick hikers in the same location. However, I got a little uncomfortable when they headed South over the bay and immediately turned off the freeway. When two of the guys pulled knives, I had a feeling that Oregon was not truly on their agenda. They proceeded to search me, take all of my 20 bucks (big score) and told me that it was nothing personal, just their way of making a living. After telling me not to look back because there would be a gun pointed at the back of my head, they dumped me in the middle of Oakland. This is not where a skinny white boy wants to be alone at midnight, however, a very nice lady that could have been a twin sister to Angela Davis gave me directions to the freeway. After a ten-block sprint I was picked up by the proverbial VW hippie van with about six people in the back. I started telling my story to this one guy who ask where I had come from. One thing led to another and it turns out he was also originally from Hawthorne, we were in the same class and had attended Hawthorne Intermediate together. The guy said his journey to San Francisco was complete, he had friends there and he gave me his last couple of bucks. Talk about restoring your faith in humanity. Oh yea, they dropped me off in the exact location in Berkley where I had previously been but this time I got a ride from a trucker and helped him unload his goods for meals until we reached Oregon. In the excitement of the moment I forgot the guy's name and never got the chance to say thanks again. So if by some equally strange chance you are out there again, thank you my friend! Those few minutes with your smiling face and your generosity "could not" have come at a better time.
Yeah, I'd say that tops the Sloey "MIRROR" story all right. Thanks Chris and have a great river rafting weekend. Anyone else have a great story to tell?.....OK then, Ctown is closed for the weekend. Have a great weekend Cougs.
