Message: I haven't been able to catch the BB movie yet, but I have it on tape. It's interesting reading the feedback's comments about the movie. I think it's great that current students at HHS are checking in. Hawthorne was a great place to grow up. Cougartown is a great place to check into to relive a lot of those wonderful times and places. We lived on 118th and Prairie and my older brother can remember riding his bike by the BB house and hearing the dad yelling and then my bro would ride like the wind down the block. Thanks again for the memories, JB, glad you had a good vacation. God bless ...

It was sad watching how their Father was. I can't even imagine how hard that must have been. Living
with emotional abuse has to be the worst. They went through alot. I have enjoyed their music as far back as I can remember. I still listen every now and then. I think it is cool that they went to HHS.
Another thing Welcome back to California Curtis Conway. San Diego Chargers are lucky to have you.
Welcome home John, I hope you had a wonderful vacation. Your fingers have to be tired after getting all this feedback caught up.~~Kristi

Message: Hi JB and all Cougs. Just a quick response to the "where did the Wilsons live" question...I was a little toot back then but my moms avon lady lived across the street from their house on 119th and Kornblum. I used to go over there with my mom to visit her and made friends with her daughter Joyce Franken. The house was surrounded by a sparkling white cement fence to keep us noseys out. It was the only remodeled house on the block and one time just before they moved, on a dare I ran up to the door and put gum in the doorbell. It was the corner house and the nicest on the street. They moved shortly after...wonder why?

Message: The Beach Boy's house as shown on TV was not even close to the original. Those houses were built prior to WW2 and had very defined rooms, not the open floor plan shown. They had only two bedrooms and one bath with tub only! Single car garage with the heavy pull up door, not the two car with the modern roll up door, with windows yet! The street did not look the same...too crowded and close together. We know the house had not been added onto or the boys would not have all been sharing a room. Our tract ran from Doty to Yukon and actually started on Imperial with houses and included houses on 120th Street facing the Hawthorne Airport. It was a great neighborhood and I have very fond memories of that place, that time and those people who lived there with us. John is right, the Beach Boys house is gone with the freeway and the ambience of that area is gone as well.

Message: I'm not so sure Alan is right about that "Brian Wilson/AFS student from Australia" thing. There WAS an exchange student from Australia at HHS from 1969-1970. His name was Andy Rust. Furthermore, Andy is listed here in the Alumni section. He was a friend of my older brothers, and probably my first "crush". The next few exchange students at HHS did not include anyone from Australia (at least through '74 when I graduated.) So the debate continues. Was there ever an exchange student to or from HHS named Brian Wilson?

Message: Regarding the Beach Boys movie. My 15 year old daughter Kasey really enjoyed the movie on the group. She has all kinds of questions, so I told her to come to feedback and see what everyone has commented on the Wilson's lives. She did last night and loved the web site. Although she's a Mira Costa High student she was raised in Hawthorne most of her life and considers it her true home. Most of her close friends are currently HHS students now.
Anyway's, one of her questions was if anyone out there knew where the Wilson's lived in Hawthorne.
She especially loved the actor who played Dennis Wilson on the mini series, he was a cutie before the long hair grew in.
So if any of you Cougars can help her with the question we would appreciate it. Thanx!
Melinda and Kasey, The Wilsons lived at the other end of where this picture was taken (119th and Doty), but unfortunately the house, and the other end of 119th St was taken by the 105 freeway. They lived on the North side of 119th street a couple of doors West of Kornblum.

It shows that a great deal of work has gone into putting this all together, the memories that have started to come back, like 26th Street, cruising the route, A&W, The Witch Stand, Drag racing the route and PCH, choir, drill team, drama, and many more. Thanks for all hard work, please keep it up.

John may not even know about his window. Having taken a weekend away, and once again a slave to the old serpent, CT Feedback Page, I'm not sure he's had any time to catch up on his E-mail (psst, do you think we should tell him his window is so close to home and take away a reason to complain about rain coming in the front door?). JB, it's beautiful and will certainly dress up your new abode.
Royal, Carl was there when you were, but he pretty much made himself scarce. I think the Boys were already touring and doing their music thing, even during his sophomore year. He was in Mrs. Jensen's combined English and Government classes. Frequently she'd send him with some paperwork to the office, telling him to come right back, which frequently meant an hour and 45 minutes later. I guess he needed to stop at the bathroom and comb his hair on the way back. Does anyone remember, Dennis buying a new XKE Jaguar, driving a couple of blocks, only to plow into a telephone pole that jumped out in front of him, and he simply had it towed and went out and bought another. Urban legend, or ? Saw a poster (Kenwood Car Stereo, I think) once with the five of them and five classic cars. One was an MG-TC and I speculated that it was the one "little" Rick Cooper rebuilt (if I remember correctly, Rick lived directly behind them). Don't know. Maybe, if Coach sees Rick he'll ask.
Hey Glenn, Yes I know the window is in town. Thanks a million for picking it up for me. Now all I have to do is get a little time to go get it. I'll do it today. Thanks again Myrna. I know you did a great job and I can't wait to see it.

Message: I really enjoyed the Beach Boys movie., especially when they would mention they were from Hawthorne and showed some guys in their lettermen jackets at Frosties. It was a good movie but made me feel sad for some of the things they had to go through. I can't believe that no one in the class of 69 has mentioned April 18, 1969 Jr.Sr. Prom, "I Can Hear Music" when our own Beach Boys thanks to Ken Mercurio talked their manager into playing for their Alma Mater. At the prom they played for a couple of hours in-between teasing some of the teachers they had had in high school who had given them bad grades and were there as chaperones. Till this day I have great memories of the prom. I like reading some of the comments the cougars that knew them in high school have made. It's great being a "COUGAR".

I think I have OD'ed on the BEACH BOYS lately. I saw some of the A&E special recently, also watched the mini series. How many know ABC also showed a 1990 movie of the BEACH BOYS life Sunday afternoon. It was very similar to the mini series. I too love their music. My 11 year old grandaughter almost wore out my Beach Boys tape in the car. There music never gets old.
Everyone raves about Pinks hot dogs, I've never been but does anyone remember the round stand on the south west corner of Hawthorne and Imperial? I don't remember the name but they had pastrami dips -my husbands favorite- and the BEST chili dogs -my favorite.
Yes, I do. My dad would order about 6 pastramis and clean out the free pepper bin.

Message: My mom, along with Mary K. Lucey, was the nurse at HHS when the Beach Boys released "Surfin'" I remember the day she brought home the 45 and played it for us. She told us some boys at school had cut the record. Later, she remembered telling a couple of the Beach Boys that they ought to finish high school and get their diplomas, in case they needed something to fall back on if their musical careers flopped. My mom was always the sensible one. I was 10 or 11 when all of this happened. My only "live" encounter with a Beach Boy was one night when I saw Dennis. Oddly enough, he was hanging out at the library.
He was waiting for a girl.

Message: I thought the movie on the Beach Boys was good. I, fortunately, didn't have to go through such a difficult childhood, so I can't sit in judgement on the way the Beach Boys lived. I knew them in High School but didn't know what they were going though. I played football and baseball with Brian (I was one year behind him in school). I played football with Alan Jardine and was on the field when he broke his leg in a game his Sophomore year(just as the movie stated). Dennis was always the wild one, while Brian would keep things within himself, Dennis would let it out in a rebellous manner, each person handles a difficult situation their own way. I didn't know Carl as he was the youngest and I don't think he was at HHS while I was there. The movie was interesting to me because it started in 1961, the year after Brian, Alan, and Mike Love graduated from High School. I was a senior that year, so I got to see the rest of their life, that which I wasn't so familiar with. More later, I think I've used up enough space for now. Thank God I'm a Coug. R. Lord

Although I was too young to know "the boys" as schoolmates, their music has been a major influence in my life. All too often there is a fine line between genius and insanity. Brian certainly crossed back and forth. As for Dennis, the wild one, it was he who got me fired up about music, and drums in particular. To Dennis Wilson, to Mr. Richard Upton at Dana, and to Mr. Fred Morgan at HHS, I owe a great debt of gratitude for the inspiration and the instruction that allowed me to follow my dreams of making music.
