Message: I read that article too. Really to bad about our hometown. The mayor here is really good as is the mayor who made Waikiki so beautiful now. It appears a major problem is parking. Tear down some of the buildings that are vacant and replace them with multi-level parking structures. They even have movable parking structures now to increase parking space without taking up additional room. There are answers but it appears the council doesn't have much creativity or desire. And the graffiti here in Vegas is probably as bad as in Hawthorne. Just they have people to clean it up faster as they do in Hawaii. They even have paint that repels the spray paint and all you got to do is go wash it off with a power washer. Honestly it sounds like they need to find new council members and a mayor.

Message: Read the Daily Breeze article, "A rough road back to glory." It's very sad, that the Hawthorne City Council can't agree on ways to restore Hawthorne's luster of days long ago. I only wish I could send are Mayor Oscar Goodman, "The Greatest Mayor in the World," along with his City Council to Hawthorne. I know they could return the two-mile length of Hawthorne Boulevard back to the glory days of long ago. Everyone has been to Vegas and has seen Las Vegas Boulevard (strip), envolve into what it is today.

Message: Little Scott Burris! Now there is a name I have not heard for many years. Our time at HHS was separated by many years but we worked together long ago. We also once spent a week cruising the Southwest visiting ghost towns and enjoying adult beverages. If anyone still is in contact with Scott, please tell him about Cougartown and feel free to share my email with him.

Message: Had a "quasi" Cougar sighting a few nights ago. I was at the Angels-Mets game at Angel stadium and they were playing music on the speaker system. When "Fun-fun-fun" came on I told my friends "Now those are my homeboys from my high school. The young lady behind me leaned forward and said "You must be from Hawthorne High!" I said "How might you know that young lady?" She explained that both of her parents went to HHS! Her dad's name is Dwayne Biesel and is 48 years old which should make him the class of 77 or 78? She said he played baseball at HHS. The Cougar connection is everywhere it seems!

Message: I always enjoy swimming at the Hawthorne pool during the summer. I had long hair back then so unfortunately I had to wear a swim cap. Luckily I found one with no flowers on it. I kept losing it while I swam and would only put it back on when the lifeguard said something.

Message: Will all this heat going on right now it reminds of days gone by at the good old swimmin' hole...better known as the Hawthorne pool. I can still remember getting pinched alot by boys swimming by...I remember having to wear a swim cap. I remember one year getting one at Sav-on's next to the Fox in Inglewood. Of course I thought it was the prettist cap I had ever seen. Years later my friend told me all she could remember about it was how big and colorful the flower was ha! I probably looked like Carmen Miranda but I thought I was styln' ha!

Message: All this talk regarding HHS is interesting. I think it is time for the alumni to get involved at HHS. We do have a Hawthorne High School Alumni Association (HHSAA). More alumni need to join HHSAA. Maybe through HHSAA we can help HHS. Clark or Susan, can you tell us about the various HHSAA projects? Hopefully there will be a meeting or information about HHSAA at the picnic.

Message: COUGAR SIGHTING! On June 11th there was a retirement party for Phil Churnside, Dana teacher. Robin Madlock Springer, c/o 1977, had been in his class (mine too) and gave a lovely speech extolling his virtues. We had an opportunity to converse to some extent. She is a great young lady and pretty, too. I thoroughly enjoyed our chat. Love to all HCH

Message: I've been a little preoccupied lately and forgot all about signing up for the Cougartown Picnic! So I've just put my name on the dotted line as a contender in the chili cookoff. I've never done a chili cookoff before so I'm really looking forward to this! Thank you John and Sharon for putting this great event together. I hope there will be LOTS of Cougars at the picnic who bring their sense of competition (although I will win the cookoff I am willing to let everyone have a chance) and adventure! Sister Sue and I will be there in the T-shirt tent and I will bet you we'll be among the first to arrive and the last to leave!

Message: As far as CVUHSD being taken over by the LA county, here's the bottom line. Think of the state of CA Department of Education as a pie. Each COUNTY department of education within the state oversees the school districts in their respective county. Each county department of education reports directly to the State Department of Education. Los Angeles County Department of Education therefore is one slice of that pie and is eventually directed by the State Department of Education to take over or oversee any district in their jurisdiction that is in financial or educational trouble. It may or may not be that any of the CVUHSD administration will be fired but everything the district undertakes budgetwise or educationwise will be overseen by the County. For the students and faculty the end result is usually positive, wrongs are corrected and progress is made toward suitably educating the students in the best method to ensure they are actually graduating viable adults. Just my two cents worth, what do we want for our students..to learn..that's the ideal outcome. It is a sad day it had to get this far but my HHS will always be the Cougars of scarlet and gold...Robin

Message: Hey, John Boy; If L.A. County takes over that's the kiss of death. They can't even manage their own schools. They will probably change the HHS school colors to Red, Green and White so that when when they take down the American flag and replace it with the Mexican flag, the colors will match.

Message: School take overs have happened in Arkansas due to financial straits or low academic standards. Some consolidation has happened, but it's been for the best for the majority of "small" schools that are effected. I only know of one mascot, school song, etc. change and that's where three districts consolidated. One large school district "investigation" resulted in the prosecution and conviction of the superintendent with "sticky fingers." Even long distance, I'd question the Breeze's motive in releasing a "hard to document" article as anything in Hawthorne's been a target for many, many years. I agree with JB that NOTHING will replace OUR HHS!

Message: Actually, no offense, but the takeover of the CVUHSD by the county is NOT what is happening. Los Angeles County does not have the constitutional authority to operate a school district. The state can. But, in any case, it is the Centinela Valley Union Office of Education that is taking over the operations of the district. There is a major difference.

Message: It's official. According to the Daily Breeze, CVUHSD is going to be overseen by the county, effective immediately. I know others have expressed concern that this might mean the Cougar, Scarlet and Gold and so much of HHS traditions might go by the wayside. I hope not, I would think that changing school mascots and colors would be extremely low on the list of priorities, but strange things can happen depending on who is approving what is going to change.
P.S. I'm hoping for the best, but I'm a bit worried.
