Message: Seeing Mrs. Carr?s name of Dana?s math department reminded of the big bang day that occurred there one day. Both my friend Fred Kaiman and I were in the classroom a few minutes early before Mrs. Carr had arrived. For some reason Fred stepped out the back door and into the hallway. Seeing my chance, I grabbed the knob and held it when he tried to reenter to prevent his return. Fred knew it was me and was getting madder and madder that he was stuck out in the hallway. He finally threatened to kick the door open if I did not let him in. About this time I spotted Mrs. Carr coming in the other door and told Fred to go ahead and kick away if that?s what he wanted to do as I let go of the door and sat down at my desk. Not more than a few seconds later there was a BOOM at the back door that vibrated even the blackboards. Mrs. Carr calmly walked over and opened the unlocked door to find Fred just sheepishly standing there in the doorway. To Fred?s credit he did not snitch on me as he moseyed to the principal?s office yet once again. Next time I will tell you about the time Fred had to take ten minutes to tell the fence outside the classroom why it was OK to talk in class.

Message: I remember Miss Alt. I can't believe Miss Carr is still alive. She must be 110. She didn't like me much. I remember her yelling at me one day in front of everyone telling me I better do good in math cause there is NO job that doesn't use math in some way. Does anyone know if Miss Putnam is still around. I really thought she was pretty. And how about Mr. Degner and Mr. Snavley.

Message: Regarding Mr Clark. My first day at 6th grade camp, I fell face first down the cement seats in the campfire area. I was bleeding from my forehead to my chin, broke off & chipped four teeth. I looked like a racing stripe with pot holes. Mr Clark took me to his office and called my Mom. He said "I'll be honest Mrs. Duran, she looks like a wreck". That entire week, every time he walked by me, he'd shake his head and pat me on the shoulder. I still had fun and I still have the chipped tooth.

Message: I do remember Mr. Clark both when I was at camp as a 6th grader and then a camp counselor in my 11th and 12th grade. What fond memories. Remember Mrs. Esterbrook, Not sure if it was Dana or HHS. But the drill sargent was MS. Ruck (sp) a great PE teacher but hard. Remember starching and ironing those white, white shorts and shirts, Getting a great tan so my legs showed off in the shorts. Funny the things that come back when you read all these feedbacks. It has really been fun finding this site and going down memory lane.

Message: Dean, Yes I remember Mr. Clark and his wonderful storytelling at 6th grade camp, very well. And MaryAnn! I had no idea it was your dad who created that great program.....the days at camp with Mr. Hood's 6th grade class and our cabin counselor, Jean Kistler, were among the best of my childhood memories........I was also a camp counselor my senior year... Mr. Clark and his stories were the highlight for me at those campfires (or our gatherings around the fireplace at the lodge). Thanks for bringing back those fun times.

Message: I was trying to find something on the Hawthorne Viet Nam memorial and found your site. I grew up in the neighborhood near 124th and Inglewood but we moved away in 1966 when I was 12. I went to Trinity Lutheran School on 130th and Inglewood so walked by HHS many times. I rode my bike through HHS many times as well. I just wanted to add I'm sorry the Vietnam memorial was tucked away in a distant corner of the city. I discovered it while walking near the Marine Ave. Metro station some time ago. Thanks, peace, MARK

Message: Mr. Clark had that special knack with his story telling and a special way with each camper. I was a counselor my junior and senior years at the Wiseburn outdoor education camp. My dad, Reese Walton, established the program with the Hawthorne School District, and wrote his master's thesis at USC on the fundamentals of the camp. Both school districts offered the unique experience for both students and couselors for many years. I don't know if it's still in place or not.

Message: Does anyone else remember from Dana or Hawthorne Youth Camp, Mr. Raymond Clark? I believe he was a Dana PE Teacher and he also ran youth camps. I remember him as a legendary, camp fire story teller with a flair for the dramatic who told a parable every year about a wise old Indian Chief who answered the question of a prankster about the fate of a dying bird. Anyway, I am garbling the story, but does anyone remember this round and jolly fellow? If anyone remembers the story, they can straighten me out on that too.
