I knew a lot of car guys in Hawthorne. I still hang around with a few of these guys and
to this day I love cars. Mike Shay is one of those "Car Guys". I guess we met in about the 9th grade and he is one of my best friends today. I think we've done more car stuff together than all of my other car friends combined. Mike is a year older than I am and we started hanging around Frosties in my 2nd year in high school. He met Barbara, his future wife at that time, at Frosties and they are still married to this day. We both worked at the same gas station in high school and we pretty much had the same interests. Anyway, he bought this 57 Tbird engine off another friend of ours and needed a place to install it in his 54 Ford and I said how about my back yard and he said will your mom get mad and I said no and she blew up and it was our very first, and last engine swap in my back yard. It took about 3 weeks. We finally got it out of the back yard. After you do your first engine job and it has been about 3 weeks, your back yard starts looking like the wrong end of a wrecking yard. There were greasy slick spots where the engine went in, the grass is dead where the tires were setting and there are greasy boards and bricks and various and sundry articles lying around that you used to pry this, or jack up that, and lets just say it took a while for the old back yard to come back to where it was. Mike and I have about 100 stories to tell. This is just the first. |
