The area west of Chu Lai, SVN was a known enemy fortitude. L/Cpl Zoboblish was killed in the area in March of 1967, and a major Operation had been implemented in May to clear them out. The Marines of Kilo Company, 3rd Bn, 7th Reg were tired. They had just spent 2 weeks in the jungle with some fierce firefights, and were now told to get ready for a second Operation - dubbed Adair. Intelligence had identified a large VC force amassing, and the men got ready for another 6-day sweep. Kilo Company took the lead, and the brunt. At noon, on 6/15/67, a platoon radioed they were in a firefight against automatic weapons, grenade launchers, and mortars. At 1:15PM, the fighting became so fierce that two more Companies were called in for support. Kilo Company reported that they had 15 men wounded including their Company Commander, and 4 Marines killed - including L/Cpl Charles Myers. The firefight would continue for hours, until the enemy slipped into the heavy overgrowth as night appeared. At the end of the day, Kilo Co had lost 9 men, with another 21 wounded....and this was only Day 1 of Operation Adair. L/Cpl Myers had been cut down in a fusillade of bullets at the first enemy contact.
