Message: Jeez my parents went out of town almost every weekend up to our cabin in Runnings Springs. But, if we ever had a party at our housemy dad would have literally killed us. I could never imagine having so many people in our house with all the expensive and fancy stuff we had laying around. If anything broke I might as well just run away for good cause my mom and dad would have collectively killed me.

Message: Does anyone still smiles when they think about the Parties they hosted while the parents were out of town for the weekend? I remember my mom took a trip to England in 1979. My mom paid a company for me to help me complete my Driving Education. All I need to get my License was an 8 hour driving instructions. This was in June and I have just completed my driving Ed's at HHS. So, all day I drove(on Saturday) and even got to visit my friend Bonnie in Torrance whom was home sick. When Monday came I passed my driving test(barely...by 3 pts!). Mom was off for England few days later and that weekend I held my first party at home. Playing the music loud in the garage and shooting pool and drinking illegal beer(got it illegally), and mooning cars that drove by and having my buddies sleep over. The next time my mom went to England was in 1980 and this time I had certain people invited and somehow the party had tripled in sized and my 24 beers I bought for just a few people was consumed in 10 mins.by 20 people. My party was probably the fastest party in record because it only lasted an hour. I guess supplies runs out..so does the uninvited guest. All in all it was fun.
My parents never went out of town for the weekend.

Message: It's a first...As of last June the longest distance that I had run/walked was from the couch to the refrigerator & back... I started a 5 month program... training to participate in my first marathon. The group I trained with was "Team in Training" a group that raises money for cancer research, specifically Leukemia & Lymphoma... Thanks to a couple of Super Cougs, Sandy (Peppers) Cooper & Royal Lord and an old Leuzinger buddy, Wayne Clements I was able to raise over $3,600. The Sacramento group raised over $350,000 and the TNT group nation wide raised over $14,000,000.... 14,000 marathon participants met in San Francisco on October 23... and at 7AM we took over the streets of San Francisco... What a great time...The SF hills were a challenge but they fell one step at a time... It may have been my first marathon but it won't be my last... Sandy, Royal, Wayne... Thanks again.. You helped make it happen...
Hey Mike, Good to know someone's getting a little exercise. Thanks for checking in.

Message: Hi. I'm new. Just had a short, funny and unprintable exchange with Roger Lynberg today about John MacKenzie. Got me thinking about Hawthorne, so I ended up skimming through a whole bunch of Feedback and was glad to see people remembered Taco Bill's, etc. So while on that subject, has anyone in the last 700 pages mentioned the dances they used to have at the Hermosa Biltmore off Pier Ave. in some cavernous former storage area just across from Juicy James? This is summer '65, "Like Rolling Stone" playing on Juicy's speakers, and these lunch time dances in this ruined basement area of the Biltmore--cool, dark, sandy. I used to surf in the morning at 26th, then drive home, hook up with Bob Allen (who was living at my house since he'd been kicked out of his--long story) and hitch back down to Pier Ave to hang with the Hawthorne people there. I'd just broken up with Maureen Kirkpatrick. I still think the class of '67 had the most beautiful girls ever--I knew some vaguely through Maureen. I remember Mary Rutter, who I hardly knew at all, being dazzling. Whatever. Anyway, I'm writing because the current hippie discussion made me think of some other things about the reality of that time, and esp. about John MacKenzie. After '65 I was away from Hawthorne except in the summers, so my friends and I sort of developed on parallel tracks 3000 miles apart, then would meet up and see where we were. Of course, the war was huge--I think our class got hit worse than any: our best athlete, Tim Thomas, was killed; my York elementary school friends, MacKenize and Bill Souza both were badly wounded. By the time I got back for an extended stay, everybody was out of the service and on drugs. So was I. MacKenzie had no legs. I hung with him a lot in his apartment in Torrance (I think); watched him crawl around, then put on his legs and we'd go to clubs down at the beach. He had a VW van, longhair; we were pretty wasted most of the time. Had great times, but really had no idea what we were doing (I think I was collecting $34 a week unemployment; he had $800 a month disability from Uncle Sam). Fun, but definitely not the hippy cartoon people think of today--a little bit darker and more lost. Anyway, I finally went back East again, later ended up In Seattle where I'd see Mac and Jim Schroeder now and then since they lived in Ashland OR where my parents had moved. Mac was always pounded on something (or usually several things in unique combinations); he never really got past the war. I later ended up in Austin where I remain (still surfing--the Gulf, Cali intermittently, Mexico, etc.) and never saw Mac again, though I did see pictures of his reunion appearances. He died a few years back. Don't know what the moral is, except that it wasn't only flower power and paisley shirts. There was some wreckage along the way.
Keep up the good feedback.
Lance

Hey Lance, Some good, and not so good memories there. Thanks for sharing....

Message: John, I have nothing to say other than that we are in the middle of yet another season. Autumn here in Los Feliz, the sun trickling in through the dusty leaves, lots of yellow leaves on the table, garnered from a nearby sticker-ball tree (which I believe is more formally known as an American Sweetgum). Boat drinks in the offing, wine front and center. Sinister things: darkness, music, even Orange County in the offing. I wish one of your columns on either side here were justified, even as I wish I myself were justified. I LOVE YOU MAAANNNN but don't forget to prune your citrus this winter...

He often worked the family's "corn stand" on the corner of Sepulveda and El Segundo Blvd. I have a lot of fond memories of Jim but my favorite memories of him are the many times my mom sent me up to the stand to pick up just a dozen ear of corn for dinner. Jim would always load a huge crate of corn in the trunk of my car after only charging me for the 12 ears. Needless to say...CORN was the vegetable of the week!!!! God be with you Jim!

At that time boxing was still a "biggie" at the Olympic so the performers played on the ring. Little Richard opened. The place was cooking until he invited the crowd to join him on stage to dance. The weight of the dancers collapsed the stage, breaking Richard's wrist and hurting much of his band. Light poles were swaying and the auditorium was evacuated. We never got to see Country Joe. Is that fairly accurate Cuz?
